So, let's look at colonial America: political hacks who rewarded donors and lived off of the tax payer where non-existent. Read the autobiographies of Jefferson and his letters. They were pragmatic people beyond the singular attribute of piety. Trump would be at home in that environment whereas Cruz would be held in suspicion.
