Cleveland wants Tamir Rice's family to pay $500 for his final ambulance ride

The city of Cleveland wants the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police 15 months ago, to pay for his ambulance ride.

According to a creditor's claim filed Wednesday in Cuyahoga County Probate Court, the city is asking to be reimbursed $500 "for emergency medical services rendered as the decedent's last dying expense." An itemized bill from Cleveland EMS includes $450 for "ambulance advance life support" and $50 for mileage, according to an invoice filed with the claim.

"The callousness, insensitivity, and poor judgment required for the city to send a bill — its own police officers having slain 12-year-old Tamir — is breathtaking," Subodh Chandra, an attorney for the family, said in a statement to NBC's WKYC-TV affiliate. "This adds insult to homicide."

Regardless of one’s opinion on the legitimacy of this shooting it is not the ambulance company’s fault and they did provide the service. I suggest the family pay the bill and tack it on the end of the multi-million dollar lawsuit they are sure to bring against the city.

And charge them for the bullets.

Brings new meaning to the phrase, “There is no free ride”.

The "ambulance company" is the City of Cleveland. It was their EMS service that provided it. So I suggest that the city suck it up and eat the bill. And pay off on the multi-million dollar lawsuit as well.

A billing like that goes out automatically; it’s not like some clerk had the option to stop it.

Now why is it callous that a person who used a service is required to pay for that service?

Afterall the information for the transaction was loaded into a computer by the paramedics and the billing software sent the bill.

The only human intervention was when the bill was placed into an envelope and then dropped into a mailbox.

Computers are not callous as they have no feelings.

I’m shocked. Shocked I tell you. (Where’s that Claude Rains pic?)

The fact that ObamaCare doesn’t provide a free ambulance ride to Sons of Barack after they pull a piece (or what looks like a piece) on cops and then are shot, is just appalling.

The kid didn’t call the ambulance. Let whomever requested the ambulance pay the bill. Probably the shooter.

The shooter was the Cleveland police officer. I assume his dispatch sent the ambulance. So it's still back to the city.

Reminds me of that episode Walking Dead, “Slabtown”, where the rogue cops were hitting people with cars, then taking them back to a hospital, “fixing them” and telling them that they now owed the cops for saving their lives!

Except that he didn't pull a piece (or what looks like a piece). They shot him too quick.

There you go again.

Relying on lies as an opinion instead of facts is really a liberal trick.

You may think (opinion) they shot him too quick, but you cannot think he didn’t have a replica gun.

That is a fact. Even the BLM crowd admits that.

Yes he did. Even the prosecutor was forced to admit it when the video was enhanced.

It was "indisputable" that the boy was drawing the pistol from his waistband when he was shot, McGinty said earlier this week.

A number of years ago a fifteen year old tapped on the window of my wife’s car with a pistol as she was leaving work from the employee parking lot of a certain very large company. Having learned from me to park so she could drive straight out (Batman leaving the Bat Cave style) of a space she just floored it and reported the kid to the guard at the security gate. Cops came and arrested the kid and a same age accomplice. It turns out the pistol was a pellet gun replica. But if he had done the same routine with me he’d have gotten two or three real bullets in his face. Rice was waving a similar pistol at the police who pulled up to check out a complaint of someone pointing a gun at people passing by a city park. It’s all on tape and interpretations vary, but I can’t blame the cop in this case for assuming the gun was real. The parents or whoever gave the kid that pistol and allowed him to go outside and play pretend gangster killed him.

Geez, even commie China only bills you for the bullet. Much more affordable than an ambulance ride!

Perhaps, but someone in leadership sure could have. Oh wait, we’re talking about local government.

Never mind.

In all seriousness, of course it could have been stopped. The city government has an IT department (or an outsourced vendor) that maintains their systems and does whatever enhancements need to be made.

To think there is no back door method to control the billing is, well, just incorrect.

If this is a City ambulance, its the same provider that put the bullets in the kid... This isn’t a situation of a private company looking to be paid.

This city is run by idiots. But hey, ya’s got Lebron back.. be proud.
