Voters in SC Ready For Trump: 'We Won't Be Swayed' By Tonight's Debate
TownHall ^ | 12/13/2016 | Cortney O'Brien

I'm here in downtown Greenville ahead of Saturday night's GOP presidential debate at The Peace Center. Down the street from the venue, a flurry of "Trump" signs led me to his local campaign headquarters. Hundreds of visitors have been filing in and out since this morning, organizers told me. One receptionist said "she's never seen anything like it" since she started working there a month ago.

All ages were walking through the HQ, many of whom were eager to take pictures with the life size cutout of Trump in the lobby.

"We won't be swayed tonight," one Trump supporter said, speaking for his family. Meaning, no matter what happens at tonight's debate, Trump is their guy. "Jeb's not going to get anything done" and Rubio "doesn't have the experience," he said, dismissing the Republican frontrunner's opponents.

Why do so many South Carolinians have Trump fever? I asked several people who were picking up Trump bumper stickers and yard signs and the most frequent responses focused on two issues: The economy and, his most vocal issue, immigration.

In fact, the first person I talked to said only one word when I asked him why Trump had his vote: "Immigration."

Trump's campaign seems to be well aware that his anti-amnesty stance has hit a nerve with his supporters. They encouraged visitors at the local headquarters to open a binder on the table that had a list of reforms Trump intends to make as president. The very first tab outlined his plans for immigration.

A group of young male students from South Carolina's Furman University echoed that sentiment. One of the young men said he's voting for the businessman because of his strong stance on ISIS and immigration.

"He's going to build a wall," he said.

Are you planning on switching to Bush or Carson?

No? Well you are “so rabid that regardless of the debate results they will march into battle on a cult of personality”.

Right?

"We won't be swayed tonight"

Really??? What if Trump stripped nekkid and screamed like Dean?

I won't swayed either unless Cruz says something to make me question.

In that case, there would only be Rubio left within the pale of acceptability.

I think Ben Carson may break out...

Seriously is Ben still in the race?

I know Don will hit Ted again for his poor performance.

And I like the guy but Jeez the Don is using you.

I have to laugh at the Cruzobts who refer to Trump’s supporters as a cult of personality, when it is they, who, in fact, have that mantra. Jim JOnes 2.0 comes to mind.

“According to our latest polls-plus forecast, Donald Trump has a 64% chance of winning the South Carolina primary.”

The allegiance is blind. It is not moored to rationality.

They are blinded by the orange. I wonder if he uses the same tanning bed as Wynn Duffy or John Boehner?

But it’s good that there are more and more Republican debates, for a number of reasons: 1. It just highlights at one and the same time how FEW Dem Debates there are, and how few Dem candidates there are. It can’t also help but create and confirm the sensation that there’s something wrong with that by comparison. Especially since the two on the Dem side seem to be working together to prove if nothing else, that Hillary is a safe Moderate Lib choice next to radical Socialist Sanders and 2.More Repub debates is a technical necessity right now to winnow this field as quickly as possible down to THREE, And to demonstrate how Trump has taken off and distanced himself from ALL others, no matter what percentages they wind up with. There should be some quick attrition by this time tomorrow. It is still hard to see Jeb dropping out, no matter what happens to him. But I think he’ll finish behind Cruz and Rubio.

Is Carson still in the race?

Fiorina doubled his numbers in New Hampster.

Won’t be swayed by debate?

What an odd thing to say and precisely what worries me.

Like Trump? Fine, but why announce that you are suspending all judgement in your support? That hardly helps you or your candidates image.

I’m backing Cruz, but its within the realm of plausibility that he could self-destruct and I would then throw my support elsewhere. It does no one any good to swear blind allegiance to a mere human.

I encourage all the FRumpsters (I like FRumpster by the way, no insult implied) here to come back down to Earth and keep your support of Trump reasoned. Ditto for everyone else. We’ll all come out the far side of this for the better.

Trump can win this election tonight by looking at Cruz and saying, “And when I am elected, providing the Republican Senate stalls Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominees, I will appoint my opponent Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court.”
