What happens if there is a deadlocked case?

When the Court is deadlocked, the lower court's decision is "affirmed by an equally divided Court." This resolves the case, but hold no precedential value (i.e., does not affect later cases).

Thank you for your assessment of a deadlocked case.

We will miss not only Justice Scalia's vote, but also his persuasiveness.

May Obama's nominations never leave Committee.
