Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) released a statement Saturday night following the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia that contained a warning shot to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY): Don't play politics with filling vacancies on the Supreme Court bench.
"It would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat," the statement read. "Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate's most essential Constitutional responsibilities."
Read the full statement below:
"There is no doubt Justice Antonin Scalia was a brilliant man. We had our differences and I disagreed with many of his opinions, but he was a dedicated jurist and public servant. I offer my condolences to his family."
"The President can and should send the Senate a nominee right away. With so many important issues pending before the Supreme Court, the Senate has a responsibility to fill vacancies as soon as possible. It would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat. Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate's most essential Constitutional responsibilities."
I agree with your opinion.
''My condolences to the family.''
FUHR!
Send Harry a rubber band. And block Obama appointments.
Oh yeah, cause Harry Reid’s all about the Constitution! [eyeroll]

Harry and the 0bama nomination should be placed in the same giant toilet and flushed.
It's all in the reps. Shaping and building, Brofessor!
Oh, and Harry got his black eye from a close family member who knew what an a**hole he was.
Personally, I'd like to give that guy a DSM.
Obama promised change.
The refusal to seat a new judge in under a year is change after all.
Off topic but it pains me how quickly this has been politicized, with talks of political tactics and filibusters and what not.
The man just died today. Let’s mourn a great man. Democrats should give this a rest. There will be time for the politics and maneuvering . They really shouldn’t be doing all this now.
FUHR!!
Hey Harry, here’s hoping your drunken brother puts out your other eye. It would serve you right!
Indeed.
No one can be appointed without senate consent. If you don’t approve, then don’t consent.
Lyndon Johnson started that particular habit of political callousness (celebrating his own mano and mojo in the face of others' adversity) back in 1963.
John Kennedy's body was still cooling in the Capitol Rotunda, and LBJ was already holding meetings with his stoolies and stoogies and laying out his election run in 1964 and his legislative campaign for the next spring session of the Congress. Business as usual, IOW.
Sorry, Reid, the Republicans will choose the next justice.
...or what, you slimy cockroach?
...or what, you slimy cockroach?
Harry, F-you.
