Maine election officials have cleared a firearm background check proposal for the November ballot. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said Thursday that the referendum supporters obtained 65,821 valid signatures, exceeding the minimum threshold by more than 4,500.

The proposal would require a background check before a firearm sale or transfer between individuals. The parties would be required to meet at a licensed firearm dealer, who would conduct a background check on the gun recipient and complete the sale.

There are exceptions, including transfers between family members. The proposal will go to voters unless Maine lawmakers approve it.

Looks like nannie bloomers and the mommunists (HAGs) have managed to sell another bill of goods to mindless dolts. KInda like in Nevada. Promise of a total end to gun violence and a total end to domestic abuse. I wonder whatthe ratio of male to female signees is. Not to mention "non gender specific" individuals. Wake up Maineiacs.

The anti-gunners have been relentless with the petition effort.

The old Maine is dead. People have moved north from Massachusetts to escape the socialist hell, but they have instinctively gone about creating a fresh socialist hell in Maine.

These efforts need to be opposed with a big PR blitz, exposing them for registration schemes that do not reduce crime or make people safer.

Takes a lot of money, time, and work.

The anti-gunners have been relentless with the petition effort.

They've found a formula that works, and will spread it to all fifty-seven states.

I see no way the measure will pass. The petitions just got it on the ballot. I watched some of the signature gatherers, people said “no” about 3:1 over people who signed.

Yep, this’ll fix the problem of guns in the hands of criminals, as Jamal will now have to run a background check on Daquan before he sells him a stolen gun out of the trunk of his car parked behind WalMart, or he’ll get in really big trouble.

Some of my liberal friends are stongly for 2A up here. I don’t think this has much of a chance. Mainers like their firearms.

They are going after AZ next. Not sure if this year or 2017.
The crown jewel, typically AZ is rated the #1 state for respecting gun rights.

Are all Maine’s permitting and licensing laws up to date with regard to the practice of the rest of the Bill of Rights?

“Not good lets hope the Maine gun owners fight together against it.”

They will along with several afinity groups. We just went through a similar referendum on banning bear baiting and it lost by a large margin. We will actually have 5 or 6 liberal measures on the ballot which I believe will have the opposite effect of the proponents plans. It will drive conservatives to the polls and could turn Maine completely RED.

Yes, “common sense gun safety”.
Who could vote against that?

I’m quite concerned due to the influx of liberal Californians and other undesirable LIVs to AZ. I’m a part time resident and hope to retire there eventually, hopefully before it becomes Cali east politically.
