".....But even Texas loomed over his ambitions, and a dismal finish here could have hurt his son, state Land Commissioner George P. Bush. There was a very real possibility that the elder Bush could have finished a distant fifth place here, dinging a once-dominant family brand in the state.
There was no indication that his home state would deliver him many delegates on March 1, if any at all, as Texas Republicans head to the polls during early voting.
Most Texas operatives interviewed for this story agreed that recent internal polling among campaigns up and down the ballot showed Cruz with local and statewide leads, followed by real estate magnate Donald Trump and Bush's intra-state rival and former protege, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.
The immediate repercussion in Texas will be what happens to Bush's vast network of donors and bundlers. His super PAC alone had at least a dozen $1 million dollar donors with names like Ray Hunt, Trevor Rees-Jones, John L. Nau III and Robert McNair - top state GOP donors.
The network is so vast it's hard to assume there will be a monolithic movement to a single candidate. Some could end up with Cruz, but the widely held assumption in the political class is these donors will mostly be attracted to Rubio.
That was also the reasoning two weeks ago, when Bush had a weak finish in the Iowa caucuses. But then Rubio stumbled the following Saturday night at a GOP presidential debate, and Bush finished ahead of Rubio in the New Hampshire primary, buying himself some time to compete in South Carolina.
But despite last-ditch campaign help from his brother, the former president, Bush was unable to put together any sort of a win - moral or outright.

There’s the arrogant notion wealthy people get first dibs from the folks they contribute to.
Voters wanted none of it. And Jeb wasn’t inclined to look beyond the people who funded his presidential run.
One suspects nearly all his votes came from them. Finis.
Jeb ran the worst campaign I’ve ever seen.
Every time he kept retooling it, his standing went from bad to worse.
It was a parody of a bad campaign.
It’s about time!
This vindictive little spoiled boy will seek revenge you watch
Please clap.
Translation:
In my mind I was a winner
I had all the dollars in the world
And all the famous on my side
Chief Of State I was destined to be again
Such is life in this world of ours
Fickle is the Wheel Of Fortune
That plays us for good or for woe
Nothing would turn my plight around
Any one who tells you to your face
Winning is right in the bag
Don't know how I lost everything dear
Being President was out of luck
This year the Wheel Of Fortune
Turned against me and all my woe
Is on display for all to see
Let it not be told I was a winner
For under the sun no fate
More terrible can be endured
Than the ignominy of losing in shame.
Cruz will probably win Texas, which means he is not dropping out.
Rubio will probably inherit the bulk of the Bush donors, which means he is not dropping out.
It will be a 3-man race to the end.
Trump will win the majority of delegates easily in a 3-man race.
I think he would win head-to-head against either Cruz or Rubio, but he wont have to.
The Two Ineligibles will remain in the race to the end.
Like two photons in a two-slit experiment, they will provide just the right interference pattern to cancel each other out.
Trump will be nominated in a walk.
“Jeb ran the worst campaign I’ve ever seen.”
A perfect example of a terrible campaign.
Read my lips...NO MORE BUSHES!
If this means that payment is suspended as well, then this is over. The K Street GOPe lobbyists will drain another account, most likely Rubio or Kasich.
Past, Texas voters...your next assignment: Remove G.P. Bush from office...
I early voted on Friday. Neither George P. Bush or Ted Cruz got my vote.
