Kasich signs bill to defund Planned Parenthood

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed a bill Sunday prohibiting the state from contracting for health services with any organization that performs or promotes abortions, blocking government funds to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood isn't explicitly named in the legislation, but the law will prevent more than $1 million in funding from the state health department from going to the nonprofit to fund programs such as HIV testing, health screenings and prevention of violence against women.

Kasich, who's tried to project a more moderate image as a Republican presidential candidate on some issues, had been expected to sign the measure. A spokesman for the governor said earlier this month that he intended to sign the bill when it reached his desk. He did so Sunday, a day after finishing a distant fifth in South Carolina's primary.

The bill was swiftly denounced by Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.

"This legislation will have devastating consequences for women across Ohio," Richards said in a statement. "John Kasich is proudly eliminating care for expectant mothers and newborns; he is leaving thousands without vital STD and HIV testing, slashing a program to fight domestic violence, and cutting access to essential, basic health care."

On the campaign trail Kasich frequently talks about the importance of funding for expecting mothers and newborn babies. A spokesman for Kasich's gubernatorial office, Joe Andrews, said in a statement the new Ohio law is consistent with those views.

Well Kasich is a party man but I could live with him as VP. It would not surprise me if Trump picks him. Ohio is a must win state.

I heard his father was a mailman... Doesn’t make him any less of a loser of a choice.

RE: This sounds like the only thing he’s done that makes sense.

Chairman of the Congressional Budget Committee that developed the only balanced budget ( and surplus ) in recent memory is the other one.

I don’t forget good things people have done and only remember the bad things.

RE: Liberals will just sue to restore the funding.

Liberals will do what they’ll do. What we need are people who will do the right thing in OPPOSITION to them. This is a good first step, no matter how small.

By all means, follow your conscience. As for me, the letter “R” is not that special to me. I want a Constitutional conservative.

At state level he defunds it, but national level he toes the Obama line. Kasich is another pu$$y RINO.

Kasich is squishy on some issues, but has always been pro-life. They tried a bill a few years ago to ban abortions when a heartbeat could be detected. That went no where for some reason. so, this is an issue he is strong on. The 2nd Amendment too - but, he is for common core - not good!

I just can’t. This is as much as war as anything else. For me, no GOPe sycophants can be tolerated until we’ve gotten a non-establishment candidate elected. I wanted them chased out of the race as fast and harshly as possible.

...democrats come up to him and tell him how much they like him.
**************************
That should be a big clue for Kasich as to why he doesn’t get many votes in the GOP primaries.

Ooh! Kasich defunded the “good” part of Planned Parenthood, too, Trump is going to be mad as hell.

Women will be dying in the streets and unable to get health care (according to Trump).

While I am glad for this....why is gay marriage the “law of the land “ but abortion is not, Kasich?

Bull hockey how many millions you still making on selling murdered babies ? or is it billions ? Planned parenthood aint a planning center its a murder mill geared to control the general population ! and generate billions !

“If the choice is between a flawed Republican who will do the right thing more often and a Democrat who won’t do any right thing, the choice is clear.”

Exactly. One would think more people would have learned that lesson the past seven years.

What exactly did he do?

It isn’t like the CNN article is clear on the matter. Ohio state law already prohibits abortion funding.
