Trump’s Exceptionalism Explained
Politico Magazine ^ | February 19,2016 | JACK SHAFER

Posted on 02/22/2016 8:00:34 AM PST by Hojczyk

Trumps exceptionalism looks less and less to me like a political phenomenon as the campaign progresses and lot more like a cult of personality, residing somewhere on the sliding scale between that of Mao Zedong and L. Ron Hubbard.

This critique will never touch Trump, who must be having the time of his life, and probably has no chance of reaching his supporters, who have tuned to the other frequency. But let’s hope it does, because unlike a failing Trump company, a failing Trump presidency could not sneak away into the night by declaring bankruptcy.

The ad hoc quality of his politics, the endless winging and self-contradiction, allow Trump access to all the tools we associate with a
salesman or a con artist. Trump need only tell his supporters what he thinks they want to hear-that everyday will bring three extra
hours of sunshine-and package it in the braggadocio that has served him so well in real estate, TV and the merchandising of this name.

For a minute there I thought you were thinking about 2008.....

The ad hoc quality of his politics, the endless winging and self-contradiction, allow OBAMA access to all the tools
we associate with a salesman or a con artist. OBAMA need only tell his supporters what he thinks they want to hear
- that everyday will bring three extra hours of sunshine - and package it in the braggadocio that has served him so
well in COMMUNITY ORGANIZING, RACE PIMPING and the merchandising of his WEALTH REDISTRIBUTION.

If Trump does win in November I really think he will have a big surprise come January. It’s not all going to happen because he says so.

You’re right. Trump is a lot like Obama in oh so many ways - no real idea of how he’s going to accomplish his promises, constantly changing, alienating Congress, etc., etc. So how has all that worked out for us these past seven years?

Hillary is definitely an "off with their heads" kind of leader while Sanders is just crazy.

The collective Cruzbot meltdown this morning would be funny if it weren't so sad.

No, it's just funny. And delicious.

It is, in fact, what's best in life.

It is cult of personality. Only explanation for his support. There is not a single logical reason for it.

ALL of this is about keeping this endless legal & illegal immigration tsunami open until the American public is replaced by a new people & can no longer vote conservative policies in.....simple as that. Whatever you think of Trump; look at who his enemies are.

Well Mr. Shafer, if I hadn’t read the title I would have bet money you were writing about Barack Obama.

For you are describing someone were almost everything about them is made up. With little genuine substance and few accomplishments in their life. Someone who no serious well-heeled, properly educated person would dare vote for. Not when voting for the Presidency of the United States.

Only those drawn to a “cult personality”, would be stupid enough, to be taken in and allow a snake like Trump to “slither his way past his critics and naysayers.”

Well actually you did say something to that affect in Feb 2008 for Slate Magazine, when you wrote, “How Obama Does That Thing He Does, A professor of rhetoric cracks the candidate’s code.” (see url and end of post)

The first paragraph appears you are obviously smitten of his rhetorical skills, “Barack Obama bringeth rapture to his audience. They swoon and wobble...although few understand exactly why he has this effect on them.”(Cmon now, only a smitten person uses “bringeth.”

You say Leon Wieseltier of the New Republic wrote, “Given that many of his speeches are criminally short on specifics.” Referring to Obama.

Finally per your article, “No less an intellect than The New Yorker’s George Packer confesses” that after listening to an Obama speech, he couldn’t remember what Obama said, but, “the speech dissolved into pure feeling, which stayed with me for days.” (is this guy related to Chris Matthews)

No where in the article does it seem like anyone is concerned with his accomplishments, but are merely mesmerized by his personality and rhetoric.

Hmmmm, so if you are right, I wonder where Mr.Trump got tuned into that “cult personality thing.”

Yes, the similarities from 2008 are striking, although Trump never needs a Teleprompter. Disagree with either, and you're a racist/traitor/clinger/et al.

Trump is far closer to the center, but he's a conservative on MWF, and a moderate on T-Th-Sat_Sun, unless he changed his mind.

But it's done in amazing fashion!

I thought that it was interesting to read you took a short break due to the contention here, to return to write a note of contention.
