Have to wonder how people who froth at the mouth over the sight of a pig or suggestion of eating bacon would go so long without noticing that that whitish pink meat wasn’t beef (or goat) and could not be hilal in any manner at all. Must have been selling at quite a discount.

Ok, but you have to admit - didn't you laugh when you read this? Even if this Swiss butcher (not a halal butcher, just one pawning off pork at hala beef prices to unsuspecting muzzies) was just doing it to make $ off the muzzies Europe pipes in, it show he has absolutely no respect for islam. I like that.

What is the specific charge here? Would the butcher be prosecuted for misrepresenting pork to people if they were not muslims? As a Roman Catholic I would still expect meat A to be represented as meat A.

Yup, that's the issue. By way of analogy, there is nothing wrong with selling cubic zirconia and other fake gemstones. But if you sell them as diamonds, you're going to get yourself in trouble (and you also have pretty stupid customers).

On some reflection, it's not a perfect analogy--diamonds are far more valuable than cubics, and there's not a meat more valuable/delicious than bacon--but the point is, if you tell people you're selling them X, you'd better not be selling them Y instead.

The Halal part is a bit of a side show. An inspector came in, and noticed the beef didn’t look like beef (beef costs more than pork in Switzerland, apparently). The butcher sold 6,000 pounds of it. Some might have gobne not only to Muslims, but also Kosher Jews and more still to people who have a food sensitivity to pork.

I really like lamb and I really like pork. I would not want to be sold pork when I was expecting lamb. I still wonder,though,if it were merely ‘Catholics’ defrauded would this be an international story?

Well, there ya go. The "anti-Muslim" BS angle is what gets headlines, but underneath, it's just a straight-up fraud case.

For what it's worth, Kosher Jews would buy only from a Kosher butcher, and certainly would not buy beef from a butcher who also sells pork. Precisely to prevent unknowingly consuming Kosher meat because of shenanigans like this.

I purposefully said Kosher Jews and not Orthodox, because there are some conservative Jews who kinda sorta keep some of the laws. If the meat is prepackaged (e.g. Best or Hebrew National Hot Dogs) some strict Jews might be okay with it. I have been told that Kosher food on airplanes has about 20 layers of wrappers on it. But that was back in the '80s, when you could pre-order special meals.
