Trump and the Rise of the Unprotected
Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb 25, 2016 | Peggy Noonan

We're in a funny moment. Those who do politics for a living, some of them quite brilliant, are struggling to comprehend the central fact Republican primary race, while regular people have already absorbed what has happened and is happening. Journalists and politicos have been sharing schemes for how Marco parlays a victory out of winning nowhere, or Ted roars back, or Kasich has to finish second in Ohio. But in my experience any nonpolitical person on the street, when asked who will win, not only knows but gets a look as if you're teasing him. Trump.

“I think people desperately want to believe that they are a part of something important. That they MATTER.”

I agree entirely. Our unchurched, secularized culture is totally at the mercy of demagogues. People have forgotten - “put not your trust in princes or in the sons of men.”

“People have always wanted to believe in the man on the white horse and they have always been disappointed and things have always ended worse for them than before.”

Then you go ask your buddies at the RNC would they STEADFASTLY REFUSE to run a candidate with Trump’s positions.

So sorry, they had their chance, WAY TOO MANY CHANCES, actually.

Now it’s our turn.

It was good. A change for Peggy Noonan. She wasn’t as anti-Trump committed as say George Will, who will probably retire to the south of France when Trump is elected.

I’ve been saying for a while. Build those refugee centers in Martha’s Vineyard, San Francisco, Malibu and West Palm Beach. Heck, take a chunk of central park and build one there too. Right along 5th avenue.

Yes, you certainly can. However, religion (or Christianity, at least) has been virtually eliminated from the public square and has so little influence or importance in our society anymore that we’re not likely to get a religious demagogue. Not a Christian one, at any rate!

Trump is no savior for sure but who else can win the presidency? With a mostly sane electorate Cruz would do just fine—or Santorum for that matter. The governments of mankind have been flawed and Trump is a man with flaws but he’s the horse to ride on now and none other. Let’s hope he’s a useful workhouse of production in DC and not just another worthless old steed good only for the glue factory. I voted for Trump here in Tx. If he turns out to scrooge us conservatives I will repent and regret my vote for him but for now I’m giving him a chance.

Wow, what a stunted, short view of American history.

“As repulsive as they are, it is insanity to think that Carville or Axelrod or Plouffe aren’t brilliant at their jobs. Look what they’ve taken from us all.”

They are ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT - the best in the business. They manage to consistently get 40% or more of the white vote and they don’t off whites a damn thing. That takes some INCREDIBLE SKILLS - and lucky for them the smart people at the Republican Party (and they are smart) focus all their skills at KEEPING OUT people that have positions similar to Trump.

Thankfully Trump has the skills needed to head-to-head against the brightest in BOTH PARTIES, which is why the Washington Post just this week DEMANDED that the Republicans take out Trump...as they know that even the best of the Dems will have their hands full against him.

Correct.

Nonetheless, lots of "conservatives" habitually long for one.

I’m not sure it’s true that conservatives long for a religious dictator.

However, one of the problems in the conservative world is that there was a tendency to pitch things to a reliable voting bloc, which was, for a long time, the Evangelicals. They were not interested in much of anything except a candidate’s “walk,” as they call it, and were not very policy oriented. But they did vote, so the pitch was made to them on religious grounds.

The Evangelicals have pretty much broken down as a voting bloc. Even on social issues, they are much less committed than before, and since they were never policy oriented (big government, small government, they really didn’t care), there’s no hook for them.

I was going to include world history, but I thought that would be entirely too insulting.

You really have no idea what life was like prior to the United States?

...they have always been disappointed and things have always ended worse for them than before.

And this time, the disappointment and despair will be even greater in proportion to the adulation wasted on just another loud-mouthed narcissist.

I think Noonan is pussy-footing around the real issue. The country is not merely being made less safe. It’s being dismantled, deliberately, by the Marxists, Muslims, and globalists. But Noonan would rather die than sound too much like Alex Jones.

Oh, I can't even say for certain what a "conservative" is anymore, having been told by more than one person that I am assuredly not one, simply because I don't agree with one or more of their criteria. Nonetheless, I still see an ample subset within nominal "conservatism" which would be quite happy with a religious dictator as long as said dictator was in agreement with them over such dogma as they deemed essential.

As one of the "unprotected" that Ms Noonan (who appears to have found at least one acorn this week) refers to, I perfectly understand the appeal of Donald Trump, and I also understand the appeal of Ted Cruz and Ben Carson. All three are in their own way, someone's idea of the man on the white horse.

Give her some room, dude! This is a HUGE STEP for the GOPe, coming to the realization that people really do exist outside of their nice little bubble. Once she settles in with us, she’ll start to figure out the rest.

You’re right; just because these problems gave rise to Trump, doesn’t mean he is the solution. But it also doesn’t mean he’s not.

I realize Trump is likely to be a disappointment in many ways. He doesn’t embrace the conservative principles of limited government. If he reduces the scope of government it will likely be for efficiency or budget control, rather than for purposes of enforcing he limitations placed on the role of government per the constitution. If he stems the flow of illegal immigrants it will probably be for the wrong reasons. I know Trump won’t be a philosopher president who inspires a conservative movement.

I just feel almost certain that a ‘normal’ politician, even one with all the right conservative credentials like Cruz will be immediately gobbled up by the uniparty establishment, totally unable to make any difference at all. I’d like to give Trump a shot just because he shows some signs of rebellion.

It appears inevitable that the wishes of many on these boards will be fulfilled and Donald Trump will have his chance to make America great again. As I said, I will vote for him. A reluctant vote counts just as much as an enthusiastic vote.

I will even have his back so long as he behaves himself. We shall see.

About 230 years ago, give or take, a member of the “protected” class summed this up in four words: Let them eat cake.

She found she wasn’t as “protected” from the real world as she thought.
