The South was to be Ted Cruz’s springboard to the nomination, his firewall in case the first few contests didn’t quite finish off the competition.
After a string of third-place finishes, the boasts are gone. The optimism seems forced. Cruz is now engaged in a long slog, overshadowed by Donald Trump and Marco Rubio and heading into Super Tuesday with dim prospects for retaking control of the Republican presidential race.

Cruz has done better than Rubio in all the official vote counts and most likely will win his home state. Rubio has won nothing. I really think Cruz belongs on the Supreme Court

I looked at the RCP information before I posted. Cruz’ latest polling in Texas has him in the 38 - 42 range, when about a week ago he has in the 32 - 29 range.
Realistically, if the trend continues, that should likely place Cruz in the 40’s on Super Tuesday.
So was being optimistic, because of my rooting interest for Cruz.
Maybe there’s a 25% chance that Cruz hits 50%.
Now, though, he's picked up the entire list of GOPe talking points, gotten cozy with Rubio, and made a mockery of several of his own campaign messages in doing so. He's shown that he's not just campaigning, he's answering the GOPe dog whistle

Georgia is all in for Trump.
Trump is pulling the ultimate “I’m an outsider” scam. He’s a typical northeastern New York values RINO backed by compatriots Giuliani and Christie.

I’d give Cruz a 25% chance of making it to 50%, not just because of that one poll, but because of the trend over the last 5 or 6 days. There’s an upward trend, and as with stocks, “the trend is your friend.” But Cruz will likely fall short.
If Cruz makes it to 50%, he’ll be talking votes from Rubio thus keeping him under 20%. (No one can take votes from Trump, because of the intense nature of the love between Trump & his followers that dare not speak its name.)
Not quite as catchy as "Rosebud", but I suppose he'll stick with it.

That is down in the Jeb and McCain numbers.
Cruz lacks charisma and his other problem was he sought many of the same voters Santorum and Huckabee targeted. As it turned out, they didn’t vote for him in the numbers he hoped for and he made no effort to expand his base of support. Which is why he is mired in 3rd place.
Anyone with a modest understanding of the South knew Ted’s so-called “Southern Firewall” was nothing but a fantasy.
In a more normal time, it would have worked.
But this is anything but a normal time and people just don’t want another politician.
Which is why Trump is in the lead.

Yep - the ONLY HOPE now for the GOPe is to use Cruz to minimize the number of delegates that Trump gets and throw the nomination into an OPEN CONVENTION.
At that point, the first two names crossed off the list are Trump and Cruz. Most likely Rubio is next too, as he has too many conservative positions (except Amnesty, of course) and also too much ‘history’ that will come out.
So now, THEY BRING BACK THE DEAD, and the decision becomes Jeb, or Romney, or Linda...and once again they control the process.
I just wish Cruz would figure this out, he otherwise would have such a BRIGHT FUTURE in a reformed Republican Party...but if he gets labeled as an ENABLER of the GOPe, he is FINISHED in the political world.

Today on Fox, he told Wallace that Trump was responsible for the robo-calls from some white supremacist group. He knew this wasn’t true.
Another problem Ted inflicted on himself, was the idea he was losing states because folks who lived in them were heathen and whacked out Leftists.
Would a leaning Republican Democrat crossover for a guy like that? Heck no.
If you’re a Christian and Ted has just said the state has very few Christians, are you going to vote for him?
He pulled this routine in New Hampshire, and when things started looking bad in South Carolina, his team started using that type of talk there too.
This from a guy that would need to take those states in November. It was just plain idiotic.
Some people have been saying that most big cities in Texas are very Liberal areas.
This is another way to turn people off, talking like that.
It’s his home state, and folks are talking it down without realizing what that may cost Ted.
When you’re addressing a state, you never every trash any of it’s populace. You talk about the great state and what fine people it has.
You don’t freeze them in a negative position. You seek to move them from that position.
