Romney calling Trump 'phony,' urging Republicans to shun him

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is charging into the increasingly divisive White House race with a verbal lashing of Donald Trump and a plea for fellow Republicans to shun the front-runner for the good of country and party.

Romney is branding the billionaire businessman as "a phony, a fraud" whose "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University," according to a speech Romney planned to give at the University of Utah on Thursday morning. The Associated Press obtained excerpts of his remarks in advance.

Trump, in turn, dismissed Romney as "a stiff" who "didn't know what he was doing" as the party's candidate in 2012 and blew a chance to beat President Barack Obama. "People are energized by what I'm saying" in the campaign and turning out in remarkable numbers to vote, Trump told NBC's "Today."

In ratcheting up the rhetoric, Romney cast his lot with a growing chorus of anxious Republican leaders -- people many Trump supporters view as establishment figures -- in trying to slow the New York real estate mogul's momentum.

"Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud," the former Massachusetts governor said, according to the early excerpts.

But it was unclear what impact his words would have with voters deeply frustrated by their party's leaders. Trump questioned whether the party rank and file would listen to "a failed candidate" for whom "nobody came out to vote."

Romney has been chipping away at Trump in recent days, but the speech Thursday was certain to be his most forceful statement yet.

Panicked GOP leaders say they still have options for preventing Trump from winning the GOP nomination -- just not many good ones.

There is no statistical data to back up your assertions.

Romney trashed Palin and McCain because had they won then he would have had to wait 8 years.

So.....

I have noticed that Rubio, and now Romney, always talk about what is best for the party. It is all about party loyalty. I am more interested in what is best for the country. My loyalty is to the country first.

+1

Oh, so now the Media-Persian empire cares what Mitt thinks. Where was this respect for Romney’s views during the 2012 election season?

Trump vs Romney:

1. If I were Trump, I would simply say nothing and avoid Romney completely, and then I would watch Romney disappear quietly into the good night. I wouldn't bother with him.

2. If I felt that I needed to respond publicly to Romney's criticism, I would say something like this:

"Sorry, but Romney has nothing to say that I would be interested in.

"I just don't have the time or energy to waste responding every few minutes and every day to Romney's criticism of me.

"I'm sorry Romney, but I'm so busy running for President of the United States that I just don't have the time or energy to waste responding to your criticisms of me.

" God bless."

“If elected I still believe Trump will turn on the conservative base in many instances, and while I remain a steadfast Cruz supporter, I understand you have to pick your battles. If Trump get the nomination the main battle is to then break the back of the GOPe.”

Agreed. I’m with Cruz until/if he decides to call it quits. But this “going full Mississippi” on Trump is insanity. They’ve got to stop with these David Duke/KKK attacks yesterday!

As much as I don’t trust Trump because he’s been on both sides of so many issues over the years and I’m not certain which Trump we would get once elected, there’s not a shred of evidence that he’s a racist, and he has absolutely ZERO association with the KKK. All he did was stumble (badly) in a CNN interview. I don’t know what he was thinking in his response, I would say he was probably just employing his usual M.O. of “not playing the media’s game” and it kind of backfired on him . But if the GOPe keeps up these Mississippi-esque tactics, they are going to alienate millions of voters and guarantee Hillary’s election and the end of the GOP as we know it.

then they probably feel morally obligated to speak out

*********

IMO to connect the word morality to a card carrying member of the GOPe is a misapplication of the word.

The tried and true statement that Southern ladies use would be a good retort toward Romney by Trump would be:

Bless his little heart

Every Southerner would know its meaning and give Trump recognition in the South.

"If elected I still believe Trump will turn on the conservative base in many instances,"

So do I but other than Cruz so would every other candidate. Trump probably has more backbone than the others and probably wouldn't be a complete puppet like a Rubio, Bush, Kasich, etc.

"In nearly 8 years what policy of Obama has the GOPe stopped? In 8 years, what has the GOPe prevented Obama from obtaining. The answer to both these questions is -- nothing."

Not only that but in 8 years of George Bush, 6 with a GOPe House and Senate, what was the greatest conservative accomplishment? What liberal policy did they not continue in a "lighter" form even though they had all the power? ~crickets~

You know Cruz would be smart to side with Trump on this ... the winner.of this GOP primaries will.be the one the has the biggest distance from the party leaders the biggest outsider of a party wins it all......

The one thing that both Cruz and Trump and their voters should be in 100% agreement on is their biggest enemy to all of us is the current GOP establishment and their total cluelessness ....

No greater evidence how out of touch they are.

-Any Trump supporter would rather dump their well used kitty litter on Mitt’s melon rather than listen to him.

- If there’s a few percent on the fence and willing to give Mitt a listen, they are not going to go with Rubio. Maybe Cruz, but never a Rubio.
