Romney calling Trump 'phony,' urging Republicans to shun him

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is charging into the increasingly divisive White House race with a verbal lashing of Donald Trump and a plea for fellow Republicans to shun the front-runner for the good of country and party.

Romney is branding the billionaire businessman as "a phony, a fraud" whose "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University," according to a speech Romney planned to give at the University of Utah on Thursday morning. The Associated Press obtained excerpts of his remarks in advance.

Trump, in turn, dismissed Romney as "a stiff" who "didn't know what he was doing" as the party's candidate in 2012 and blew a chance to beat President Barack Obama. "People are energized by what I'm saying" in the campaign and turning out in remarkable numbers to vote, Trump told NBC's "Today."

In ratcheting up the rhetoric, Romney cast his lot with a growing chorus of anxious Republican leaders -- people many Trump supporters view as establishment figures -- in trying to slow the New York real estate mogul's momentum.

"Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud," the former Massachusetts governor said, according to the early excerpts.

But it was unclear what impact his words would have with voters deeply frustrated by their party's leaders. Trump questioned whether the party rank and file would listen to "a failed candidate" for whom "nobody came out to vote."

Romney has been chipping away at Trump in recent days, but the speech Thursday was certain to be his most forceful statement yet.

Panicked GOP leaders say they still have options for preventing Trump from winning the GOP nomination -- just not many good ones.

Romney couldn’t even respond in the Second Debate to the decisive intervention of a fat, biased “moderator”. Sounds like verification of the old adage, “Those who Can’t - Teach”.

Mittens couldn’t even stand up for himself, and now feels compelled to stand up for some whiny ass little class president type.

I heard Romney on TV about a week ago, he was asked if he knew why so many people hate the establishment. He said he knew why, but when he rambled on it was evident he had not a single clue, and hadn’t even been aware that people hate the establishment. It was the same with McCain when he was on a few days ago, he mumbled something about jobs, and then went on to say that there were great things going on in the senate. Clueless, totally clueless.

Morally obligated?

So after using the GOP party for all it was worth during their career they are “morally obligated” to speak out agains theri front runner because they are losing an election?

That not a moral obligation, that is childish petulance and betrayal.

Lazy Mittens he knew he was going to run from the get go. But he lacks the energy to go the distance. So he dogs it for 8 months.8 months he sitting on fat kister doing nothing. He will crap out because Mittens is lazy. He folded on the last election because he ran out of gas. He is just a better looking version of Jebito.

DT is a direct threat to they’re power. This will get worse before better for him IMO. I predict many dirty tricks to be played in the next 10 months or so to upset Trump.

Having said that, I’m a Cruz supporter but I do not like what’s being done to DT.

Certainly a few "Party Leaders" had to have known Romney's speech was going to be a bad idea.

Yeah, beat it, Romney. You couldn’t handle Fat Candy or Long-legged Mack Daddy in 2012. Take your show back to Mass-o’-twoshits!

Let's see if Trump can come up with another brilliant move to suck the oxygen out of Mitt's little speech & turn media attention away. Even if he doesn't, I think Loser Romney's manure throwing is going to backfire & probably backfire big time at that. What's that song?

You don't tug on superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim Trump

Millions of republicans failed to turn out and vote for Romney in 2012...

What is the basis for comparison?

Since the speech is pre-written, Will Mitt Romney be reading off a teleprompter?

This ought to wake up Cruz voters. If your candidate AGREES with Romney that Trump is going to ruin everything then you know that Cruz doesn’t care one bit about the country and about the conservative agenda. First and foremost his loyalty is to the party and he will go along with whatever the big money donors want.
