Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday he is softening his stance on visas for highly-skilled workers.
“I’m changing. We need highly-skilled people in this country,” Trump said during the Fox News Republican debate in Detroit. “If we can’t do it, we will get them in.”
Trump’s stance toward awarding H1-B visas is different from the one he takes on his campaign website, which argues that more visas for highly-skilled foreigners would “decimate American workers.”
“One of the biggest problems we have is people go to the best colleges … as soon as they’re finished, they get shoved out. They want to stay in this country," Trump said at the debate. "They want to stay here desperately. They’re not able to stay here. For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country.”
Trump said he was now in favor of the H1B-visa program - despite what his website still says.
“So you are abandoning the position on your website?” Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly asked.
“I’m changing it and I’m softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country,” Trump said.

Such things are "negotiable" you know.
I was not thrilled with this position change from Mr. Trump, but quite frankly, it’s a moot point now that they’ve increased the number of H1B’s under the most recent “budget”/continuing resolution anyway.
It absolutely BLOWS ME AWAY anyone supports him.
He is a monkey throwing poop at a wall to see what sticks.
Trump’s views are “evolving”. You’re not going to like what you get in a Trump presidency.

He can say whatever he wants, do whatever he wants, behave in the most infantile way and it just doesn’t matter. Sigh.
I disagree with Trump.
We don’t need more immigrants period.
However, he is speaking only of those who are here in our university programs of science, technology, engineering, and math who excel at it.
He is talking about a PURE immigrant...in other words, one coming permanently to this country.
He’s wrong, but the H1B covers any style of training in STEM, but only for a temporary 3 years.
Not only this, Trump complimented Rubio on his conduct during his Gang of Eight episode. Said he showed ‘flexibility’.
Are you talking about Trump or Obama?
Everything is negotiable when you are a salesman trying to close a sale.
Good luck trying to get the salesman to honor any warranties after the deal is closed.

Enforce existing federal protections for American workers: Conduct systematic audits of the companies that have taken advantage of the H-1B visa program during the last 15 years. All companies that have violated the terms of the H-1B visa program will be barred from using it for a period of years. The Attorney General will have authority to prosecute any individual found to have committed H-1B visa fraud, and offending companies will be suspended from receiving government grants and contracts.
Create an advanced degree requirement: Only individuals with advanced degrees in their respective fields may be brought to the United States with an H-1B visa. And preference will be given to those with advanced degrees from American universities.
Create a "layoff cool-off" period for all H-1B visa applications: Companies must wait one or two years between laying off a worker and bringing in any H-1B foreign workers to ensure that the program is not used to displace American workers.
Establish accreditation or recognition requirements for overseas schools: The recent lack of federal oversight of the H-1B visa program has fueled a cottage industry of diploma mills. Foreign academic institutions must meet minimum accreditation standards at least as stringent as those imposed on American universities in order to qualify for the advanced-degree requirement.
Require sworn affidavits describing domestic hiring efforts: Companies will provide sworn statements and documentation that detail their efforts to hire Americans before requesting foreign workers through the H-1B visa program. Individuals who make false statements in these affidavits will be subject to perjury charges.
Suspend companies from H-1B visa eligibility for failure to help foreign workers obtain green cards: Many companies misuse the H-1B visa program to train foreign workers that they intend to send back overseas to compete with America. The law must impose additional requirements on employers to pursue Legal Permanent Resident status on behalf of their H-1B visa-based foreign workers, or risk loss of access to the program.
Wait a darn second....are you trying to tell me Trump took a position on an issue that is different than one he recently held?!? I don’t see how that can be...
He switches positions more often than a porn queen. I wish he’d get his stories straight. At least now the visa program will be considered “cool.”
Trump clarified (and it is true) that H1B is not the same as high skilled, and that the question concerned high skilled and not H1B. All this previous is true.
He has not changed his position on H1B.
