Trump softens H1B-visa policy during GOP debate
Fox News ^ | 03/04/2016

Republican front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday he is softening his stance on visas for highly-skilled workers.

“I’m changing. We need highly-skilled people in this country,” Trump said during the Fox News Republican debate in Detroit. “If we can’t do it, we will get them in.”

Trump’s stance toward awarding H1-B visas is different from the one he takes on his campaign website, which argues that more visas for highly-skilled foreigners would “decimate American workers.”

“One of the biggest problems we have is people go to the best colleges … as soon as they’re finished, they get shoved out. They want to stay in this country," Trump said at the debate. "They want to stay here desperately. They’re not able to stay here. For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country.”

Trump said he was now in favor of the H1B-visa program - despite what his website still says.

“So you are abandoning the position on your website?” Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly asked.

“I’m changing it and I’m softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country,” Trump said.

“I’m changing. We need highly-skilled people in this country,”

What about revamping education to create these needed people, instead of kids with degrees in nothing marketable over a short order cook?

You’re not going to like what you get in a Trump presidency.

I'm wondering if anyone remembers Clinton's tax cut pledge, which turned into a retroactive tax increase the minute he took office. "Ah worked harder than I've ever worked in mah life for the American People, but things are worse than we was expected to believe ...."

Sen. Cruz Presents Measure to Strengthen, Improve Legal Immigration
Offers amendment to increase H-1B visas to help improve, retain high-skilled labor force
May 14, 2013
|
press@cruz.senate.gov / (202) 228-7561

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today presented an amendment to the Gang of Eight immigration bill that would improve our nation’s legal immigration system by increasing high-skilled temporary worker visas, called H-1B visas, by 500 percent. The measure would effectively address the needs of our nation’s high-skilled workforce by helping meet the growing demand for workers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. It will also make block grants available to states to promote STEM education efforts and increase domestic STEM professionals. The committee voted against the amendment 4 to 14 with every Democrat voting against it on a party-line vote.

“I strongly support legal immigration. Legal immigration is a fundamental pillar of our nation's heritage, and I was pleased today to offer legislation that would have improved and expanded legal immigration by dramatically increasing the cap for high-tech temporary worker visas. This amendment would not only improve the current system, but would also encourage economic growth and create new jobs in America. There is currently a serious shortage of workers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math, yet every year we send thousands of high-tech graduate students back to their home countries to start businesses and create jobs. This makes no sense. I’m disappointed in the committee’s vote to reject expanding high-tech immigration. Although the Gang of Eight's bill makes a modest step towards improving high-tech immigration, it does not go nearly far enough. There is no reason to arbitrarily cap high-tech visas at 110,000 when these jobs are going unfilled. We need economic growth here and now.”

Sen. Cruz’s amendment would:

Immediately increase the H-1B cap by 500 percent from 65,000 to 325,000.

To truly fix our broken immigration system and take into account our nation’s economic needs, we must put more emphasis on increasing employment-based immigration. There is a current shortage of qualified high-skilled workers in the U.S., with an estimated 230,000 advanced-degree STEM jobs going unfilled by 2018.
Additionally, more H-1B workers mean more jobs for American workers – according to a study by the American Enterprise Institute, for every additional 100 H-1B workers, 183 jobs are created for U.S. citizens.

Help retain the high-skilled workers that are trained in the U.S. by allowing “dual intent.”

This would allow foreign students at U.S. colleges and universities to enter the U.S. on a temporary H-1B visa if they intend to get a Green Card once they complete their studies.
Currently, about 300,000 students come to America annually to be educated, but are required to return home upon completing their education.

Create block grants for states to promote STEM education in their public schools by raising H-1B fees.

These block grants will encourage educating our children in these high demand fields, opening more doors of opportunity to future generations. According to the Joint Economic Committee, between 2010 and 2020, demand for STEM graduates is expected to grow by 17 percent, while employment for those graduates will increase only 14 percent, partly because American graduates are not available or qualified to fill these jobs.
The block grant program would be funded by raising H-1B fees from $750 to $1,250 for businesses with fewer than 25 employees, and from $1,500 to $2,500 for those with 25 or more employees.

“Trump isn’t confined by the prison of facts and what is possible , he can ‘speak to the people’ promising the impossible to them.”

At one time Cruz’s policy was too loose. He has since tightened it up.

Trump’s policy needs to tighten up now.

Companies are using H1b’s not to supplement American workers but to replace them and hold down their wages.

American politicians traditionally try to balance out their tough-on-illegals stance by promoting legal immigration, it is a way of making it all seem more palatable to the press. But when half the country is out of work, including tech workers, we do not need to be bringing in millions of fresh immigrants. Immigration policy - and this includes H1b policy - should serve the interests of citizens. First, foremost, always.

He is talking about a PURE immigrant...in other words, one coming permanently to this country.

No, he isn't. He is talking about those here on student visas. There are about 900,000 foreign students in the US studying at our universities.

He’s wrong, but the H1B covers any style of training in STEM, but only for a temporary 3 years.<

No, H-1B visas are for temporary, skilled workers. The 3 year visa can be extended an additional three years. And after that a company can sponsor the guest worker for a permanent immigrant visa. Obama has used an executive order to allow the spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in this country as well.

The H1B was created to bring in leading Subject Matter Experts from important scientific fields. Not for tens of thousands of graduates of Indian diploma mills. Just like the H2B was created to bring in top-level artistic and athletic talent.

Trump is just going back to the original intent of the program here.

Yes, H1B is for temporary workers in skilled fields.

Trump was talking about permanent immigrants in advanced STEM fields.

That said, I don’t want ANY immigrants at all.

This is gorilla dust. The Trump Administration will absolutely destroy the corrupt Washington Cartel and they all know it. That is why they are pulling out all the stops on their pipe organ to stop him. It’s not going to happen! ( A little Trump lingo there.)

Been there done that don’t need to look at a stinking school textbook again ever. You attend.

Point was DJT did not mention it even though it was the perfect answer to the question. Which makes me edgy about his whole stictk.

I’m always learning and do not need to go to some Trumped-up psudo-university to do that.

“I disagree with Trump.

We don’t need more immigrants period.”

I agree we need policies that create jobs for Americans and that reward them with higher compensation, not policies that bring in cheap labor and job takers who undercut the value of an expensive college education. As much as I like Trump he needs to be consistent in this. To some extent he needs to tone it down too and get specific on the issues that brought him to number #1 such as absurd PC, stupid trade, immigration against our laws and interests. The public is fickle and will tire of too much lack of substance.

As a Trump supporter I am against illegal immigration and the unfair trade practices.

I don’t caucus with people not wanting to halt immigration. I am not anti-immigration per say.

Additionally, I want to put a stop or reduce Muslim immigration because of trending Muslim behavior rather than their race, etc.

"The candidate" learned about the abuses of the system on the trail. I agree with you that he should have repented and repudiated his former position. It is an attribute of Cruz' character with which I take serious issue and one of the reasons I have not supported him. I will defend anyone against what I regard as unjust charges.

But, if you are making former positions an issue, why not the Donald, who at times morphs his positions within hours? How do you trust a candidate supposedly against illegal immigration who then says he will expedite their return rewarding them with legal status after having violated our laws?

Did you know that Cruz doesn’t even have a healthcare plan and the media has given him a total pass on that.

But “DETAILS” is all they shout at Trump 24/7.

Odd, isn’t it?

H-1B's can apply for a green card, as you know.

I just think it's funny that a position I've held for years (and was savaged for it) is now acceptable because some carnival barker from NY says it's ok.
