That’s how long the old guard of the Republican Party believes it has to take down Donald Trump in what’s become a mad scramble to blunt the billionaire’s momentum before delegate-rich, winner-take-all contests crown him the presumptive GOP nominee.

Thought exercise:
GOP plays shenanigans and nominates someone other than either Trump or Cruz. Trump decides to go Independent and offers VP to Cruz to join. Now I know that I would vote for that ticket over what the Republicans offer.
But could such a ticket - assuming that the GOPe does not support the ticket - win the General election?

You want to stop Trump quit attacking him. Have McConnell and Ryan come out and endorse him as someone they can work with, unlike Cruz. He has said he is flexible on immigration and other issues. The GOPe should take him at his word and accept that he is the candidate who will negotiate with them and the Dems to get things done in Washington.
The GOPe should see Trump for exactly what he is a fellow member of the moneyed class that has spent his whole life gaming the political system for personal gain. If he needs to be a little disingenuous to get the nomination so be it, it’s all part of the art of the deal suckers.
Mr. Trump has our enemeies” attention both foreign and domestic!

Exactly. If Trump wasn’t there taking much of the flack, it would be Ted Cruz. The old guard can’t stand either one of them.
