I didn’t read the book but I do have the DVD. Instead of a sleep shop, the movie depicts a “renewal” levitating carousel in which they burst into flames.
I guess the book stuck in my mind more. I reread it just a few months ago. I do remember that bursting into flames scene in the movie, but only after you mentioned it. That visual probably lends itself to film more than describing a blissful drug trip, which can be done easier with words. There are a lot of drug trips in the book. It was the only real escape for the characters’ horrendous existence. That and sex. It was a moral void. Having a short, mandatory expiration date doesn’t inspire you to excel at anything.
We need to tread very, very carefully in this area.
