Trump Says Carson Would Have Major Education Role in His Administration
Education Week ^ | Daarel Burnette II

Posted on 03/11/2016 4:16:12 AM PST by RoosterRedux

Leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said during Thursday night's GOP debate in Miami that he had spoken with former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson for more than an hour about education and that Carson would be "very involved with education, something that's an expertise of his," in a Trump administration.

He stopped short, however, of specifying exactly what role Carson would have if Trump were to be elected. Carson was expected to endorse Trump during a press conference on Friday.

Trump's comments came in response to a question about the Common Core State Standards, which Trump said he wants to get rid of, along with the U.S. Department of Education.

As far as Carson and education goes, "he has such a great handle on it," Trump said according to a Washington Post transcript. "He wants competitive schools. He wants a lot of different things that are terrific, including charter schools, by the way, that the unions are fighting like crazy. But charter schools work, and they work very well."

I can’t wait to see him work. I figure were so screwed that no matter what trump does will be an improvement over 200 years of politicians destroying us. I for once have hope for our country.

Congress can mandate that the department do stuff that would take more than Carson.

Yes, she got kicked out the DC school system for all the right reasons.

The others make a fair point that the Dept of Ed should generally be doing less than more, but how they get to less could be pretty impactful and there’s always the bully pulpit.

Count me as impressed that this was Carson’s priority. He’s got his narcissistic leanings like all pols at this level, but he is also by all counts a very good and sincere man.

Who cares if that’s what it is. It’ll probably help Trump at this stage, and if Cruz cuts into Trump’s path too much the nomination will go to a GOPe candidate in a brokered convention.

“That’s true of everything else he’s promising.”

That’s correct ALL of the candidates promise things that a president has no direct way of providing that promise. Except that boy king Obama who tried to castrate Congress with his Executive Orders.

Why would he put someone he called a Pedophile in charge of education?

Maybe because that never happened and you're talking out of your rear end?

Just a guess...

What kind of education post if Trump gets rid of the Department of Education?

You CANNOT turn off something that big light turning off a light switch.

A man like Carson could turn it around and then began scaling it down until it's not much more than a figure head dept.

Trump's PLAN is to bring the control of education back to the State level and take it out of Wash D.C.'s hands

My guess is Carson will be his VP with focus on Education and Healthcare.

Good move as Trump proved last night he had no clue on education issues.

Not only that, but the federal govenrment will continue to run surveys and make recommendations of what works and what doesn’t. A humble role, but important and one that needs a talented, dedicated leader.

What you're talking about is an administrative role not an educational one. It's a shut down role and not a policy making one. Trump wouldn't need Carson for that. If Trump is saying Carson would have a major education role then that must mean he's winging a new education policy to replace his earlier promise to get government out of the education business.

Gee, Trump contradicting himself. Who would have thought? </sarcasm>

So, you are saying that he never compared Carson to a child molester?
That never happened?

Interesting.

Cruzers have always felt entitled to Carson’s support and his voters. And they were the only ones smearing him non stop from Iowa until he dropped out. Really bizarre, IMO.

Carson has the health care program and clearly stated the task would be to assimilate the various ideas put forward by various congressmen, some of which are physicians.

Trump has a health care program on his website, which doesn't bear much of a resemblance to the plan Carson has proposed. Are you saying Carson will be creating a new one?

States have to restructure to do that. That transition would be greatly helped by someone committed to education and Ben Carson fits that description.

That's not what Trump has been saying. End Common Core and shut down the Education department. Nothing about new mandates to restructure the states. All the states will need to do is figure out how to replace the funding that they used to get from the Department of Ed.
