First Read: How Last Night's 'Civil' Debate Helped Trump

Last night's "civil" GOP debate helped Trump

Individually, we get why Donald Trump's rivals mostly backed away from challenging the GOP frontrunner in last night's 12th -- and possibly final -- Republican debate. For Marco Rubio, who saw his fav/unfav drop eight points in the past month in the NBC/WSJ poll, the nicer debate allowed him to dial back from the nasty, personal insults that dominated the previous two gatherings. For Ted Cruz, the current status quo helps him get closer to his desired one-on-one matchup against Trump. And for John Kasich, he simply followed the same strategy he's been using throughout this race. But collectively, backing off from challenging Trump only helps the frontrunner. Don't get us wrong: Rubio took issue with Trump doubling down on his "Islam hates us" statement; Rubio and Cruz hit Trump over his support for normalization with Cuba; and Cruz again questioned Trump's Republican credentials. But none of Trump's rivals made the explicit case why the GOP frontrunner should be stopped. And folks, we are four days away from Trump having a firm grip on the Republican nomination by winning Florida and/or Ohio.

Well, yah, if you look at Twitter, it’s impossible to figure out who Jonah Goldberg, Charles Cooke, Guy Benson and the other TrumpHaters are FOR, but I suspect they were Rubes or Yeb guys. They attack Trump supporters as dumb all the time.

BTW, take a look at today’s Drudge headline.

My caveat to the “it will elect Hillary” paradigm....

LARGE numbers of blue-collar Dems are apparently switching party affiliation to vote for Trump. 46,000 here in Pennsylvania.

Could it be some sort of Operation Chaos? I suppose. But in talking to these folks I think they really DO intend to vote for him in November. That has to be keeping the Dems up at night.

Trump gets an “A” for his forthright “in-your-face” unapologetic view of Islam and political correctness.

His “touchback” immigration position, his private discussions with the NY Times the tape of which he will not disclose and “flexibility” should be of great concern.

Cruz wins on the trade deal issue because he explained what a 45% tariff how this will significantly raise consumer product prices in the US. It was tried before in the 1930’s and the effect of doing so gave us the Great Depression. Congress will not permit it. Notice how Trump backtracked it last night and revealed “its a threat” if they “don’t behave”.

“NBC? They are champing at the bit for a Clinton Trump contest. Why? Because they’re polling and metrics indicate Trump will fare poorly. There is so much opposition research and negative information they intend to weave and spin into the 24 hour news cycle that will knock our eyes out. There will come a point where Trump will become as attractive to the body politic as tertiary syphilis.”

Dream on Cruz supporter...Trump has led the entire race both in numbers of voters, states won and issues. Trade wasn’t even on the radar until Trump, Immigration was a luke warm “cozy” approach until Trump, Trump is not going to lead the nation into the realization that Islam does hate us. He doesn’t want to go to war against them but he wants to change that...we have to recognize the problem in order to resolve it. BTW, has everyone seen the Drudge Report headline today about Ted Cruz being the anointed one and video of his father speaking in tongues. The media has been holding this back for the most part...but, the democrats will destroy his campaign just with this one issue if he were the nominee...but he won’t be so we will not have to worry about it.

I think he has shown that he is leader in all these debates because he has set the tone of each and every one of them.

When it’s necessary for him to drive opponents up the wall, he’ll just say something to drive them there.

And when he said before last nights debate ‘it will be a smoother debate’ and it was.

Leadership.

Trump’s my guy, but, he needs some Debate Training before he faces the witch in the General Election. Cruz/Rubio killed him on Israel and Cuba. You can’t handle a Communist country 90 miles away like a Real Estate Deal.

Re: Islam, he should have told the 3 politicians: “It’s been 15 years since 9/11, where are all these Muslim nation allies whose help we need? Where have they been for the past 15 years? Cruz says we have to understand the problem. We’ve had 15 years to understand the problem Ted, and you politicians are still trying to understand the problem with no results. The problem is either we kill them or they kill us.”

My man, Donald, needs to brush up a bit. Every Debate he misses some golden opportunities.

Trump has not led in the number of votes in terms of percentages. That’s fact. That’s reality. The odds of a contested convention are great. Who do you think will get Rubio and Kasich’s delegates?

Re: Your Post #5: So, are you saying Trump will lose if he is the GOP nominee? He’s bringing thousands of Blue Collar Dems and Indys into the GOP column. That’s a minus for the witch and a plus for The Donald.

Cruz seems to just ramble. Says a lot but accomplished nothing

As an elitist junior Senator ... isn't that really his job?

Actually you can, and in the end of the day, it is all about Real Estate

Trump wanted deals to be made with Cuba, not a blank check like Obama handed them. Rubio and Cruz did get more specific but Trump was on par with them with the big picture.

As for Israel, Trump is the only one with a solution. Israel doesn’t need more weapons, they already have what they need and they do use them. They have a very strong military force. So giving Israel more weapons and money isn’t going to solve the problem (we are already doing that). A peace agreement might. It is either a peace agreement or total annihilation of the Palestinian people. They (the Palestinians) need to realize that what they are doing isn’t going to be helping them.

“Boy the TwitterTrumpHaters are just beside themselves that it was too “civil” and “let Trump off the hook.”

But here’s the thing: they tried dirty, kindergarten, name-calling attacks. Those didn’t work.

They tried “laying out their case” with logic, and evidence.
That didn’t work. So maybe, just maybe, Trump is saying something that resonates with people?”

Trump is always one or two, sometimes more, steps ahead of those who are trying to bring him down, especially the media. Chess in real time.

[I thought Trump totally failed on Israel & Cuba.]

And the democrats/ socialists just moved closer to thinking he just might not be such a lunatic conservative as we thought.

He’s playing them.
