Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said on Friday that Donald J. Trump bore responsibility for creating an environment that encourages violence at his events.
Speaking to reporters at a local Republican dinner outside Chicago, where Mr. Trump had just canceled a rally amid fierce confrontations between his supporters and protesters, Mr. Cruz began by saying that the protesters who took violence into their own hands were responsible for the episode.
But in any campaign, responsibility starts at the top, Mr. Cruz continued. And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse.
Mr. Cruz invoked the protests and violent police run-ins at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and predicted that future skirmishes were likely.

The very fact space was rented, staffing/security was secured, tickets were given (even though free) made this a private event! And the host had the absolute right to control it, and exclude anyone he wished.
Suppose you held a wedding reception for your daughter. You rented space, hired staff (consisting of musicians, waiters, and caterers, etc) and sent out invitations (tickets) to your friends. Is this a public event that any one can attend and wreak havoc?
On the other hand, had Trump stood on a soapbox on a street corner and started speaking to everyone in the street, that would be a public event! And if provocative enough, might indeed incite a riot, which he would be to blame for.
See the difference?
It’s becoming more and more apparent that Ted Cruz is pond scum.
Now who doubts the wisdom of the Founders to restrict the Office of the President to Natural Born Citizens only.
Go back to Calgary Ted, or Cuba maybe!
Awesome! NY Times! I hope it is page one, above the fold.
Trump's numbers are going up, up, up. Ted Cruz is going down, down, down. Little Rubio and Kasich are also going down.
Heard that Ted Cruz lost more than 100,000 followers on Twitter and Facebook just since his grossly stupid comment about the Chicago riot last night.
Go....Away...
Here's the quote again:
And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse..
Your response was "you mean like Reagan, when he said Berkeley protesters needed to be taken by the scruffs of their necks. This does not answer the question. You didn't, and evidently won't address the "disrespecting the voters", the "affirmatively encourages violence" or the "campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press". I find that telling.
We're over 100 posts here now and the overwhelming majority of them slime Cruz without addressing the substance of what Ted said. Instead we get dozens of variations of "Ted's a fraud". It seems reflexive not thoughtful.
I suspect that my question will not be answered because to do so will undermine Trump's moral underpinnings (such as they are). Defenders know in their hearts that Reagan never said "rough 'em up, I'll pay your legal bills" or "I'd like to punch him in the face". It's been awhile but I don't remember pictures of protesters leaving Reagan rallies with bloodied faces, sucker punchers saying "well next time we'll have to kill him" or stories of Reagan's press campaign crew roughing up reporters.
Is all this directly Trump's fault - no - but he could demonstrate his committment to "doing the right thing" by suspending Lewandowski and taking 10 minutes of the hours of free airtime the networks give him to emphatically denounce the WWF tactics he has been espousing. Ask yourself why he hasn't done that yet then ask yourself if he still deserves your vote.
So...now the Times is a good paper?
Yes, he does. And why he shouldn't address it is because if he bothered to acknowledge altercations at his rallies, all he'd have is altercations at his rallies.
As for the "substance" of what Ted said, it's double-talk. He's saying two mutually exclusive things together so people like you will give him a pass while he gets credit for blaming Trump.
Didn't quite work out like that, though. Seems quite a few of his supporters know when someone is trying to have their cake and eat it, too.
And the establishment types just whistle past the graveyard.
That’s hilarious!
>>> When you give out tickets to the public the rally is no longer a private event.
False.
Que? They’ve glommed-on to the leftward narrative, as expected, hoping to bolster the case against Trump to anyone who will buy it. Got it?
Well OK. I hope that's not how he plans to run his presidency.
He has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the weasal and snake I always thought he was . F you Cruise !
Been here long before you, kid.
Will Cruz feel the same way when some #BlackLivesMatter thug attacks him at one of his rallies?
Here’s Teddy !
Getting belligerent and organizing riots aren't even in the same league. Besides, it ain't his supporters threatening to riot and trying to shut down opposition. They just want to be able to hear their candidate.
Being willfully obtuse to such distinctions is just advocating for the left.
I’ve lurked since 2000.
As they said in “The Blind Side” “It was time for him to go.”
Agreed.
