The unintentional withdrawals are the latest embarrassment for an agency that has tried to make improvements after years of criticism amid high-profile improprieties and questions about how well it safeguards taxpayers' financial information.

It took several calls to his bank before he found out that the D.C. government had cleaned out the account leaving him with an overdraft fee.
"The money was basically stolen from me. You expect this from the bad guys," he said. "You don't expect this from your government."

” I dont want IRS with any kind of access to our accounts “
The IRS can have access to your accounts whenever they wish.
Then they just overdraw the account and nail you with a penalty
My brother is a huge liberal and a tax protester. The IRS sweeps out anything he leaves in any account anywhere
Been doing it for years after one of my employers cleaned out the account they had access to through DD.
True but I still have my money in another account.
Identifying your accounts certainly targets them for garnishment, but it doesn’t authorize routine withdrawals. The problem comes when folks set up autopay so the money is directly sucked out of the account. One misplaced decimal at the utility or other company of which you are a customer and the account is empty.
Around here, I could save at least half on my electric bill if I let them suck the money out. That’s how valuable it is to them to have direct access. I’ve thought of setting up a dummy account just to make payments of that sort. You would still risk the overdraft fees if one of them stole your money, but at least your operating funds would be safe.

Long story short, the company shut down. Those with DD got money put into their accounts Fri, and it got sucked back out the following Mon. Caused all kinds of problems and fees for those with DD. I just had to wait for the (eventual) paper check, but the DD folks had to, as well.
After it was explained to me that with DD, your employer has access to your account to deposit or withdraw funds, I got real secure where my money was kept, and who had access to it.
I get that but I’m not willing to hand the executioner the axe either, as symbolic of a gesture as that might be.
I never did give SS my bank info. They just deposited my first monthly payment without telling me.
