WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama will nominate federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, congressional sources said Wednesday. The pick sets up a confrontation with Republicans who say they will refuse to consider his nomination in an election year.
Garland, 63, is the chief judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a court whose influence over federal policy and national security matters has made it a proving ground for potential Supreme Court justices.
He would replace conservative, Justice Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly last month, leaving behind a bitter election-year fight over the future of the court.
Congressional sources spoke on condition of anonymity because Obama had not yet announced his choice. A White House official confirmed it was Garland.
Garland was confirmed to the D.C. Circuit in 1997 with backing from a majority in both parties, including seven current Republicans senators.
Obama planned to introduce his pick at 11 a.m. in the White House Rose Garden.
The president sent an early morning email to supporters, saying he had devoted a "considerable amount of time and deliberation to this decision" and consulted with outside experts and groups.

“He wants the job himself........................”
And just sickening. Has he even ever practiced law or passed a bar exam anywhere?
Anti gun, anti 2nd amendment, anti Bill of Rights.
Not sure.
First they will come out and make a ‘sincere’ opposing statement then behind closed doors.........acquiesce.
Surprise, we did what we could with what we had!
DOA
“It’s a trap”
I appologize for the source that follows, but it is revealing:
Who Is Merrick Garland?
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2016/03/16/3760727/who-is-merrick-garland/
He also prosecuted the OK bombing trials and the Unibomber trial. And I read somewhere else, he has questionable position on the oil and gas industries. (that might be a big thing, Obama hates all US oil production, serves his masters)
but what Senator would NOT vote for him?...............................
Unfortunately, I live in MA. I have a lot of friends in academia and who are simply idiots. They make me feel smart.
And some of them pay me. So I have to listen to their crap.
Garland is certainly a more defensible cloture and/or confirmation vote for Republican moderates than almost anybody else he could have nominated. Has a small chance of confirmation between now and November, and is virtually certain to be confirmed in the November-December lame duck session should Clinton be elected President or the Democrats take the Senate majority.
Shows that Obama would rather be a three-Justice President (first since Reagan) than help Hillary Clinton be elected (which he would accomplish better by nominating a black or hispanic judge whom Clinton could claim the Republicans were racistly insulting by not confirming).
I’ve also seen here he’s anti-gun. I dont have any source though.
The only thing I want to hear from McConnell is “Name whoever you want...we’re doing nothing.”
Sen. Mike Lee on Fox has just said that they will NOT have hearings on Garland.
You could have mentioned ‘kinfolk!’ and all in-laws are dem and we do not discuss politics! LOL!
Need to look it up to see if they are still in-laws after my Lady’s death. You or friends may know? LOL!! (jk)
Take care.........pilgrim

Im guessing this is why he was picked.
I re read it and it was 63 which is still on the older side for a lifetime appointment in my opinion.
