Norway mass killer Anders Breivik compares himself to Mandela in court

Far-right terrorist Anders Behring Breivik compared himself to anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela as he gave testimony in his lawsuit against the Norwegian state Wednesday.

Breivik, an ultranationalist who boasted of killing his victims to prevent the "Islamization" of his country, said the difference between himself and the revered South African statesman was that Mandela "ordered action," while he had been the one to "carry out the action."

The 37-year-old, who killed 77 people in a shooting rampage and bombing attack in 2011, is suing Norway over his treatment behind bars, alleging that it is a "sadistic" attempt by Norwegian authorities to kill him, and that it is in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The mass killer's complaint centers mainly on his isolation in jail. Since his arrest, he has been separated from other inmates, and virtually his only visits have been with professionals, who meet with him separated behind a glass screen.

Addressing the court for the first time Wednesday, Breivik listed his complaints about his treatment, drawing scoffs from those in court when he complained about the quality of prison food.

His gripes included that he had to use plastic cutlery, had not been given an insulated container to keep his coffee warm, and was served microwaveable TV dinners up to four times a day, sometimes the same meal two days running.

This type of treatment was "worse than waterboarding," he said.

On the first day of the case, lawyers for the state pointed out that Breivik had access to three cells in prison, a television, a computer without Internet access and a PlayStation gaming console.

This man will always be very dangerous. I don’t think hospitalization is going to help, unless that’s the just term they use for keeping him deeply sedated. I hate to imagine how it would work if he escaped. He hasn’t the slightest remorse or empathy for the families of those he murdered.

When they were teenagers? Uh... yeah.

I've read a lot about Hitler, including The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, cover to cover, at least twice. In that book, William Shirer researches Hitler's past back to his grandparents, and even before.

Not one mention of anyone thinking he could be a future mass murderer when he was a teen, or even in his twenties.

Maybe if you had a time machine, that would give you absolute certainty who to kill.

But the fact Hitler made it to adulthood and implemented his dark vision is proof that time travel is impossible.

The murder rate more than doubled after Apartheid so basically tens of thousands of people more were killed as a result of Apartheid ending. Furthermore the number of white murder victims probably jumped by at least by a factor of ten.

Apartheid was an immoral unworkable system so I condemn it on those grounds. The white South Africans should have done this...

Your ignorance of mental illness is stunning.

Mentally ill people have reasons for their actions just like everyone else, the difference being that the actions they take that are based on their mental illness.

If you believe that killing the teenaged offspring of politicians while at a camp retreat demonstrates sound, reality-based reasoning that would lead to his desired outcome of dialing back Islamization, then I would highly recommend checking yourself into the nearest mental health facility for a 72 hour observation.
