I think it's just a form of lobbying.
It's a way to throw money at your candidate without being taxed and without them having to account for it. I.E. it's just another way to get around certain rules or (omg) ethics.

The vast majority is held by institutions and Trump does not appear on the list, at least in the first 5 pages of the 60 page list of owners in descending share order.
I would say your comment is at the level of telling a cop "You work for me and I pay your salary". I don't think using their brokerage means he is playing a game to benefit them. They have contributed very heavily to Cruz not to Trump and Trump's position statements are antithetical to GS aims.
