This year's political campaigns are discouraging and risk alienating people from government and dimming their hopes for the future, House Speaker Paul Ryan says in a speech aiming to describe "what politics can be."
The remarks by Ryan, R-Wis., come amid campaigns for each party's presidential nomination that have been particularly overheated on the Republican side. GOP front-runner Donald Trump and his party rivals have repeatedly belittled each other with personal insults, while the Democratic contest between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has been less confrontational.
"Looking around at what's taking place in politics today, it is easy to get disheartened," Ryan says in excerpts released by his office ahead of a Wednesday speech. "How many of you find yourself just shaking your head at what you see from both sides?"
Ryan said that while skepticism is beneficial, "When people distrust politics, they come to distrust institutions. They lose faith in their government, and the future, too. We can acknowledge this. But we can't accept it. And we can't enable it either."

I look forward to the GOPe’s destruction. Worse traitors than Democrats.
Correction, Ryan didn’t cave on the budget.
Ryan is a New World Order Socialist and as such supports his fellow socialists in the Democrat Socialist Party.
It goes back further then 6 years, it goes back to the 1st Bush
Keep right on governing AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE who elected you to represent them, Ryan!
And keep wondering why people don’t trust their government...
Man, these corrupt politicians are dolts.
Unless permitted by that document, wrap it in chains, duct tape it to a lally column, slide food under its cell door, and smother it with a pillow when necessary.
If the GOPe thinks they will survive if they deny Trump the nomination, they are crazy!
Dear Speaker Ryan: Trusting Government to solve the problems caused by Government is like using Cancer to cure Cancer.
Of course, people have no good reason to think this way. Who are you going to believe — me, or your own lying eyes?
Risks distrust?
That horse left the barn decades ago.
Pauly. . . WRONG . . .you guys in government have done a fine job already of alienating and enraging us. Otherwise, Trump would never garnered the level of support that he has.
“Ryan: ‘Disheartening’ politics risks distrust of government”
“Risks?? “ is he delusional?
He just doesn’t understand why we all can’t just eat cake and be quiet about it.
How ignorant and unaware can you be?
"When people distrust politics, they come to distrust institutions. They lose faith in their government, and the future, too. We can acknowledge this. But we can't accept it.Can't accept it, just enable and perpetrate it.
The institutions are corrupt. The US is a banana republic, just another plantation run by the likes of Ryan.
Ryan has the causation backwards. Distrust in government has led to today’s disheartening politics.
As political humorist Ron Hart recently said about the five remaining candidates for the Presidency, “If I were dealt that hand in a poker game, I think I would fold.”
Yep. The democrat campaign has no confrontation because it has been more of a coronation. That is what the GOPe had in mind, hence Paul Ryan’s belly aching.
When people distrust politics, they come to distrust institutions. They lose faith in their government, and the future, too. We can acknowledge this. But we cant accept it. And we cant enable it either

We have only been waiting 30 years for the enforcement we were promised in the last amnesty bill that was supposed to make another amnesty unnecessary.
Instead of that OUR government is now assisting the fraudulently documented foreigners and their employers continue the invasion of our country and the undermining of the rule of law.
Why would anyone trust multi-national politicians who are not loyal to their own citizens?
What is truly disheartening is the betrayal of the Republicans, we expect that from Democrats.
