China's Xian Y-20 military airlifter is expected to finish flight tests and be put into service with the People's Liberation Army this year, according to a report from the official Communist Party newspaper People's Daily.

People's Daily reported the assessment cames from Xu Yongling, a military expert who said the test flight period for large aircraft is generally between three and five years and since no bottlenecks occurred during development or manufacturing of the Y-20, it will be put into use this year.

The Y-20, designated as the Kunpeng, performed its first flight in 2013. It has a cargo capacity of about 72 tons and is a 200-ton-class transport. It has a cruise speed of about 570.4 miles per hour and a range of more than 2,700 miles while carrying a maximum load.

The Russians have been big in that area for decades.

The Russians have been big (or the biggest), but they have not had the tactical flexibility that the USAF has. The C-17 can go places that a IL-76 or Antonov cant dream of.

Looks kindalike the old C-141 Starlifter. Those engines aren’t near to C-17 size.

My unit deployed on C-17s. Their takeoff power is AWESOME. Il-76 doesn’t even come close, we watched them.

Checking the stats, the Chinese seem to have us in the speed category, but we still have them beat in range and lift capacity.

C-17 range (ER model): 3220 miles
C-17 max cargo weight: 85.4 tons

Samaritan’s Purse uses Russian cargo planes.

So....

I see a great big, not very maneuverable C-17 clone for multiple Sidewinders.

Or a single AMRAAM, colloquially, a “Slammer”.

Samaritan’s Purse uses Russian cargo planes.

Have you tried leasing a C-5 or a C-17 for food delivery in Africa, lately?

C-130 is about as big as you can get, other than the old USSR birds picked up at the breakup by entrepreneurs and now working civilian contracts.

"Pearce shares these misgivings. "This is no criticism of the aircraft itself, but $150 million to $170 million is a huge price tag," he said. "The Antonov is considerably cheaper, and the C-17's only advantage is that it can land on short, unpaved runways. I can't see how you can make a business proposal that would be viable. You also have to bear in mind that one C-17 wouldn't work; you'd need three to four planes."

We bought and paid for every one of those planes — and every other plane, ship, tank, and gun in the Chinese military —

with the interest we pay to China every year on our debt.

What could go wrong? The engines look like dinosaur tech, definitely not modern high by-pass turbo fans.

Great reporting using the word “about” and conversions from metric to 0.1 mph accuracy.

“...cruise speed of about 570.4 miles per hour...”

You would think a technical publication could do better - or they have been reading too many globul warming papers...:^)

True, true. But form does follow function.

But let's give them the benefit of the doubt. They stole it.
