Mizzou will now require ‘diversity intensive’ courses for graduation

The school took action this week on two diversity demands, hiring a chief diversity officer and requiring students to complete diversity-themed courses.

Still reeling from last year’s student protests, the University of Missouri took action this week on two more diversity demands, hiring a chief diversity officer and requiring students to complete diversity-themed courses.

The College of Arts and Science at Mizzou announced Wednesday that undergraduates will now have to complete three credit-hours of “diversity intensive” (DI) courses in order to graduate, saying the courses will focus on “understanding differing social groups” and “will explore at least one form of social inequality, broadly defined.”

“The proposal builds on decades of student activism and the work of previous diversity committees.” Tweet This

The College accounts for more than half of all Mizzou students, with more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled.

Similar curricular changes had been periodically debated since a 1990 rally at which students demanded mandatory “multicultural” classes, but the idea was repeatedly tabled until this week, when it was approved with 75 percent of a faculty vote.

Although the College is careful to note that the new requirements were not devised in response to the 2015 campus unrest, the press release strongly suggests that the protests were a major factor in their approval, observing that “the events of the fall of 2015 forcefully demonstrated that the concerns students first raised in 1990 have not disappeared.”

“It is important to note that this is not something that we whipped up in response to the events of last fall or the student protests,” said Elisa Glick, chair of the A&S Diversity Committee and an associate professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Glick also boasted that students will not be forced to take any additional classes, and that they will be able to choose from a variety of diversity-themed course offerings in any field of study. Students may take the courses at any point, but are encouraged to fulfill the condition in their first three semesters.

The revised A&S curriculum is not the only form of mandatory diversity training at Mizzou, however. Starting this semester, all incoming students must participate in a “Diversity@Mizzou” workshop intended to help them understand and appreciate cultural and racial diversity.

At the inaugural training session in January, for example, students were treated to several examples of cultural appropriation, such as dressing up as a geisha or taco for Halloween, and were also told that the pursuit of inclusivity should take precedence over freedom of speech.

The various diversity initiatives being pursued at Mizzou will be overseen by Kevin McDonald, who was appointed Wednesday to serve as the university’s first Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. McDonald, who previously served in a similar role at the Rochester Institution of Technology, will receive a starting salary of $235,000 to fill the position created in response to the demands of student protesters.

Illinois did that? Wow.

State lawmakers cut their funding and applicants are down, so what do they do? Why double down of course.

When I was in college in the 90’s, we had to take a course similar to this. I didn’t come from a rich family and had taken out loans, was working and had a scholarship. I knew just about everyone in my class, it was a small seminar of about 13 people. Every ethnic group, race, religion was represented. I was (am) a white Catholic girl and I quickly learned my place in the class was to sit down, shut up, and regurgitate everything I heard. Being young and stupid, that’s what I did. I had a very good friend who was black that talked about things from my point of view, because she knew that was the only way it would be heard in that class and she agreed with me. By mid semester she was shut down, too. I will never forget how I sat in that class being told how privileged I was, although that wasn’t the word used back then. My teacher decided it would be better if we had some classes at a local bar/restaurant so we would be more “comfortable” with each other, and she changed class time to evening hours. I told her I had to work, I needed to pay my tuition for the next semester. She basically accused me of lying and said if I didn’t show up I would fail. The next week I had to work and in walked the class. It wasn’t the original restaurant she wanted class held at, but I think she thought it was great I was their server. The teacher said I would receive credit for attending class because I was serving! The class, with teacher, basically laughed for three hours, ran up a $300 bill in mostly alcoholic drinks and left me a $5 tip and a huge mess to clean. Then they all got into their new cars and drove back to campus. I walked after staying late to clean up their crap. This went on for three weeks. I stupidly wrote my final paper about what she wanted to hear to keep my A average and scholarship. My black friend was mad, and used her paper to tell the teacher the class was unfair and how certain students were treated was wrong. She got a C. I felt bad about that. She told me don’t, if you would have written this paper you would have failed, and it needed to be said. We’ve been great friends ever since.

Didn’t we read an article recently that UM has experience a serious loss in enrollments because of their poor performance groveling to the BLM??

Why do I suspect that there won’t much “diversity” in the hiring of the Chief Diversity Officer?

They should advertise with “Whites Need Not Apply.”

I would like to see an honest audit of how much all of this social justice bullshit adds to college tuition. Who else but the students can be paying for all these advocacy flacks, diversity specialist, empowerment ninnies and other such crapweasels that colleges didn’t need until quite recently. I would also like to see what the federal and state governments spend on this kind of stuff The students end up further in debt to pay the added educational costs from these progressives run amok in the halls and on the quadrangles of academia.

In an afternoon session entitled "Restructuring the University," spokespersons summarized the thinking of the workshops that had taken place earlier that morning. Robert Steele, a Professor of Psychology at Wesleyan, noted that his group was aware that coercion would be required to change the university: "People will not be quietly assimilated to multiculturalism by truth through dialogue." They will have to be bought off as well as brought along. Steele described the terms of the deal: "You get research assistants, you give mentoring." In other words, using the largesse of Ford and other philanthropic institutions, advocates of multiculturalism convince the hesitant to join up by paying for research assistants. These assistants — mentors of multiculturalism — must be women or people of color. "We will have changed the university when women and people of color can see themselves running the place," Steele concluded.

It goes without saying that graduates from this university will be completely worthless in the job market.
