Trump says allies must start paying for ‘American protection’
NY Post ^

Donald Trump wants US allies to ante up if they want to continue under the “cloak of American protection,” according to his first detailed comments on his foreign-policy platform.

“We’re not being reimbursed for the kind of tremendous service that we’re performing by protecting various countries,” the Republican front-runner was quoted as saying.

Trump said he would boycott oil from Saudi Arabia and other allies unless they provide troops or funds to fight ISIS.

“If Saudi Arabia was without the cloak of American protection . . . I don’t think it would be around,” he told The New York Times.

Is Saudi Arabia really our friend or are they the enemy or our enemy?

Then again, this is what a lot of people are afraid of with Trump. He has shaken up the Republican Party, if he is the nominee...he is going to shake up the Presidential Election. If he becomes President, he is going to shake up the world’s foreign policy.

What one hand is doing the other doesn’t know...and then we get the world as it is today. Trump likely is viewing things in a very straightforward manner...that may be good, it may be bad. But as a businessman, you know WHO your FRIENDS are. How does that characteristic translate to politics?

The world is changing and it is going to change even more ...no matter who is President.

We live in very interesting times.

What do you think will happen if Putin or China offers protection for free?

First of all, all alliances should be bilateral and not multi-lateral. Even if the deal is exactly the same and we call the group NATO. That would strengthen Article 5. NATO countries in general had a very tepid response to Article 5 being invoked after 9/11.

The NATO countries should contribute a minimum of 2% of their GDP (current agreement) to their military or pay the difference directly to the U.S. Currently there is only about 4 countries meeting the requirement. The U.S. is at about 3.6%.

We already see the result in Syria. Putin stepped in to do the job the U.S. should be doing. Obama is supporting the jihadis, I get it, but a President Trump would need to reverse the current trend, not allow the power vacuum to continue.

It is still a very important part of the world economically and strategically. Russia is not doing this because they are nice. Putin is ruthless and this gives him a military presence in the area that can spread to other countries.

If we move out, Russia and China will move in - no question about it.

Great Concept!! How come no one is enforcing the rules within NATO to get each to pay their fair share?

I AGREE.

Just as an orderly community pays to employ police protection so as to make sure law and order prevails.. so why not on the WORLD stage?

I believe it's called "an investment" in keeping the peace.

Saudi Arabia pays for mosques being built all over the world. Let them pay for their own defense.

“And what happens when Putin or China offer to provide the same protection for “free”.

Trump can’t think more than one step ahead on anything.”

So your genius solution is what?

Trump is 100% correct and that is why the concentrated effort to keep him from being President. The problem is we have an out of control government and both parties are using their resources to make sure Trump does not get the nomination.

Trump for President, our only chance.

What does Donald Trump think would rise in its place?

Trump never said we would quit protecting Saudi Arabia. He says if we are in the business of protecting other countries, they will need to pay us for it. Why should the American taxpayer pick up the bill? Trump is spot on.

Hellfire missiles are $110,000 per. Why should we, the USA taxpayer, pay for those? Shouldn’t we back charge NATO for that?

Getting out of the UN is fine with me. That’s a lot different from withdrawing from our defense alliances.

Do you agree with Trump that defense spending needs to be diverted to social spending in our inner cities? Do you agree we “have no money for education”?

“I watched as we built schools in Iraq and they’re blown up. We build another one, we get blown up. We rebuild it three times and yet we can’t build a school in Brooklyn. We have no money for education because we can’t build in our own country. At what point do you say, ‘Hey, we have to take care of ourselves?’ So, I know the outer world exists and I’ll be very cognizant of that. But at the same time, our country is disintegrating, large sections of it, especially the inner cities.”
