Secret Service: No guns in GOP convention
The Hill ^ | 03/28/2016 | Jordan Fabian

The Secret Service says people attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this July will not be allowed to carry guns.

The statement comes in response to a petition that calls for allowing open carry of guns inside Quicken Loans Arena, the host venue.

The petition has amassed more than 43,000 signatures as of Monday morning. Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said in a statement that "only authorized law enforcement personnel" working with the agency will be allowed to carry firearms inside protected areas.

"Individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint, regardless of whether they possess a ticket to the event," Hoback said.

The Secret Service cited federal law that allows the agency to prevent firearms from being carried into venues with protectees present, even in open-carry states.

The Secret Service previously sent a statement to Cleveland's Newsnet5.com.

The petition, which was posted last week on Change.org, has drawn widespread attention, in large part because it seemed designed to test the limits of the Republican Party's support for the Second Amendment.

The anonymous author noted that, while Ohio is an open-carry state, Quicken Loans Arena policy forbids firearms of any kind to be carried into the facility.

"This is a direct affront to the Second Amendment and puts all attendees at risk," the petition reads.

The origins of the petition are murky and some websites have questioned whether it is satire or a hoax.

If the participants in the convention are anywhere near as emotional and contentious as those here on FR, I say this is a damned good policy!

And you are an idiot thinking our contentiousness would lead to us shooting someone.

Apparently, the Secret Service and the RNC do not support the Second Amendment.

I think it’s a good policy. Some lefty would sneak in and try to shoot Trump.

Exactly. Think about the Chicago Trump rally protester who videoed himself shooting a MAC-10.

I have visions of this convention being like the last scene of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The RNC doesn’t really get a vote in this case, and the Service has never been shy about the fact that they don’t support 2A in any area they’re tasked with protecting people.

In this case, the RNC is taking a stand against the Second Amendment.

A stand of silence.

No problem. No votes for those attending.

Look into the law regarding the blade length allowed to be carryed get a 5-6 cell C/D cell Mag-lite & pepper spray . Make sure the pocket knife is scalpel sharp ,get yourself to a martial arts school for self defense training & be ready /willing to put some Democrat in the hospital if need be.

Or a stand of not stupid. Really, who gets in a pissing contest with the guys whose job is to take a bullet for you? The RNC can complain all they want, Secret Service makes the rules, and they say no.

Typical liberal thought. Liberals also claim concealed carry means car accidents will result in shootings.

Absolutely...because you need a professional law enforcement officer to chalk victim outlines and string up crime scene tape after the fact.

Don’t let the peasants exercise their 2A to defend themselves. Their lives are worth less than Trump, Cruz, Ryan, and the rest of our betters.

After all, I’m sure the Founding Fathers disarmed themselves at the Constitutional Convention and allowed their protection to be in the hands of such professionals.

And you are an idiot thinking our contentiousness would lead to us shooting someone.

I have already had one Trump supporter say the following toward me.

"This is our last chance for a "cold" revolution. He will be on the opposite side of a "hot" one."

IF you don't believe me, I'll freepmail you the proof. And no....neither poster was reprimanded.

A nonissue. The SS was never going to agree to OC anywhere the candidates are.

The question is the open carry situation outside.

I’m a gun nut. And I support this 100%.

Too many crazies would use open carry to put themselves in a position to take a shot at Trump.
