Obama commutes sentences of 61 drug offenders

President Obama commuted the sentences of 61 people Wednesday, boosting a push for leniency in his final year that has seen him grant more commutations than the previous six presidents combined.

Mr. Obama granted clemency mostly to low-level drug offenders, part of his pledge to use his pardon and commutation power for people jailed on drug possession charges.

The president was meeting Wednesday with some offenders who have been granted commutations of their sentences by him and previous presidents.

In a letter to those he granted clemency, Mr. Obama said, “The power to grant pardons and commutations … embodies the basic belief in our democracy that people deserve a second chance after having made a mistake in their lives that led to a conviction under our laws.”

White House counsel Neil Eggleston said Mr. Obama “cautioned those receiving clemency that what they do with this unexpected opportunity reflects not only on each individual person, but also on all those still behind bars who are seeking that same shot at a new life.”

He needs to be commuting 100 times as many. It is a national disgrace the numbers of non-violent offenders we lock away at a crippling cost to our treasury.

Drug dealers should simply be executed like they are in Asia, not put in prison.

That's worked so well to keep Asia drug-free.

and no that wasn’t a racist remark- I’m simply stating that I’ll be shocked if the majority of the people he personally pardoned are white Christians

Barack Obama does seem to have great empathy for dopers, homosexuals, muslims and America haters, doesn't he?

The percent of the U.S. prison population which is black is around 35. Inquiring minds want to know: What percentage of those whose sentences were commuted were black, as opposed to the more melanin-challenged prison population represented by the other 65%?

Back in the day when I was busting drug dealers, we often knew through informants that the dealers were probably guilty of extortion, armed robbery, and murder.

However, we often busted them for possession because we could not prove the more serious charges. Possession is easy to prosecute and prove.

Expect that the people that Obama is releasing will go on to murder a few folks in the ‘hood.

That said, I have come to the conclusion that there was a “War On Drugs” and we LOST.

It is time to begin legalizing drug use again. I would start by letting clinics hand out prescriptions to known addicts. Of course, we will have to prevent them from selling the drugs on the street, but we already handle that problem with methadone clinics. At least, we did the last time I looked.

I wonder if this latest round included “William Underwood”. This guy’s daughter is all over change.org petitioning to get him let out because he’s in prison for life over a single drug conviction. Conveniently left out is that Underwood’s “single” drug conviction is for a massive Heroin smuggling ring that ran for over a decade.

That’s a “non-violent” drug offense, but that’s hardly the kind of person anyone would actually want let out.
