In the movie, "The Martian," Matt Damon was a fictional astronaut stranded on Mars. In reality, the head of NASA says astronauts could set foot on the Red Planet within the next twenty years.
"We think we're on the right trajectory to get humans to Mars in the 2030's," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told CNBC's "On the Money" in an interview this week.
He should know: Prior to assuming NASA's top job in 2009, Bolden was himself an astronaut for 14 years, commanding two space shuttle missions during that time. The U.S.'s top space official says he's confident the agency's "Journey to Mars" goal can be accomplished, building on years of space exploration.
"If we were just starting out, I would have doubts," Bolden explained. "But we've been sending precursor missions to Mars for almost 50 years now."
Now in his seventh year as leader of the space agency, Bolden told "On The Money" that a big part of his legacy will involve "making sure we're on a steady path to Mars and that we can get there in the 2030's. We're a lot closer than ever before."

I’d like to know just what does this have to do with their mission of promoting moozlums??? This is a travesty!
The government has totally hosed the USA.
Now they want to screw up Mars?
Just last week, I heard Mars would be too expensive, and we should try settling on the Moon first. I tend to agree with that. If we don’t the Chinese, Russians or Saudi backed “other” will do it.
Yes, they want to....but don't worry, NASA has been making the same empty promise for 50 years.
Like I said, the end of the world is also closer than ever before.
The difference is, we know the end of the world will actually happen.
.
In reality, the head of NASA says astronauts could set foot on the Red Planet within the next twenty years.IOW, what's he doing in that job? Von Braun's Mars missions would have required assembly in Earth orbit, using perhaps a dozen Saturn V launches, and the first manned landing would have taken place in 1978.
OTOH, I’m in for $5 (when I find it) to send Matt Damon to Mars.
Second that notion. I’ll chip in another $10 if most of hollywierd can go.
Obama says no Mars for us unless Zambia and Burkina Faso can go too.
As long as it’s one-way so we don’t have to hear their crazy rants, lol.
I was watching this NASA documentary about the Orion program to send 4 Astronauts to Mars. They want to have them live in this Apollo capsule on Steroids all the way there and back again. What is it nine months each way not to mention time on Mars. They will go stir crazy. And there is no back up in case of trouble with the Orion. How stupid.
Bolden couldn’t find his way out of the shiite house if the instructions were written on the door...
Getting off this rock and establishing humankind somewhere else before the Leftards and Mooslims totally transform Earth into an unlivable Hell Planet is a race we’ll probably lose...
Take one 5000 year step backwards once the Constitution is lost...
They should send one male astronaut with four or five Japanese hootchie dolls, or if they're available, robots, sort of a Harcourt Fenton Mudd gig. And millions of hours of videos and music.
I think there is tech that we could use that could get us there sooner, but it feels like NASA is basically just a sideshow...
Bolden is an afirmitve action NASA Director posting.
We were a lot closer in the 60s until Nixon canceled all nuclear powered vehicles: NERVA and Project Orion - Mars by 1965 Saturn by 1970 - (not to be confused with the lame capsule NASA is currently building).
You can see how far we have fallen.
2030 and the world could end when some huge asteroid hits ...
ok. I’ll raise you 5...
To say “we are closer than ever” fundamentally misrepresents how time works. If we get to Mars in one year or in a thousand, we are one day closer than we were yesterday, and closer than we have ever been before. It’s not as if the landing were in the near future and then suddenly slipped to being more distant. We will get there when we get there. It is a trick of our psychology that an event can seem close and then later seem further. The trick is made possible by our ignorance of when the even will actually happen.
With NASA everything is “20 years” away, it’s like a mirage or “fixing Social Security”.
The reason it never gets here is that the country is and has been bankrupt. There’s no money to do it.
