Donald Trumps victories in the Republican primaries may make him seem like a sure winner. But those victories have been achieved by receiving either somewhat less than 40 percent of the votes or somewhat more than 40 percent, but never a majority.
The fragmenting of the Republican vote among many candidates in the primaries made this possible. But victory in the general election for president of the United States in November is going to require a lot more than 40 percent of the votes. And polls consistently show Mr. Trump to be the most negatively regarded of any of the candidates in either party.
In some Republican winner-take-all states, 40 percent of the votes can be enough to get 100 percent of the delegates. This leverage might enable Trump to gain a majority of the delegates needed to become the partys nominee. But Trump and his supporters want more. They are now talking as if winning a plurality of the delegates ought to be enough to gain him the nomination, despite his failing to get a majority, as required by long-standing rules.
There is a reason why the rules require a candidate for the nomination to receive a majority of the delegates. If you cannot even get a majority of the delegates in your own party, how can you expect to win the November election for president?

A win by plurality is as much of a win as a win by a majority.
This is what happens when there are more than two people in a race.
The Donald is STILL coming through as the leading choice among Republicans. He is pretty close to being the OVERWHELMING choice among independents, and that is where the battleground is supposed to be.
Hold your noses, you Establishment people, and make the only real choice left to you. Anything else is a vote for Herself.
Texas primary
For Cruz 43.8%
Against Cruz 56.2%
Not counting the democrat voters in Texas, that’s a lot of Texans.
Only in the world populated by retards and Cruz sycophants is dissent considered “unhinged”.
Keep it up, and see how well you do against Hillary when you can’t hide behind the Gope and these moldy blogs.
“Per usual, Trump supporters fail to understand that the Republican nominee must be chosen by the majority of Republicans”
And when they dont pick Cruz, be sure to save the expected tears and shock.
Goldwater became soft in his later years, and I suspect that the same thing is happening to Dr. Sowell.
This is the same rationale used by Obama after reviewing the 2014 election results he didn’t like.
The National Joke Magazine.
Magazine??? Isn’t that something from the 1920s - 1960s?
The Saturday Evening Post from 1897.
Dodo birds & Buggy Whips
Day and night every negative thing is aimed at Trump, hour after hour news people, entire magazine articles, postings, etc are hurled at our candidate and we are insulted beyond words and you say that we are unhinged?
Trump will lose but hell go back to being a loud mouth billionaire and the rest of us are going to be stuck with the Clintoons again.
and your solution to that is to run the guy who lost to the guy who can’t win...ok...
truth is, Clinton’s advantage in the EC prevents any Pub from winning, but especially someone with Cruz’ limited name recognition and voter appeal; he loses every Obama 2012 state, and North Carolina as well, and finishes with 186 EV’s, and Pubs go into hiding for the foreseeable future as this country kisses up to the Third World...
Larry Sabato????? Who???? He’s a Faux News guy. Worthless his opinions are.
And remember most republicans ...(even more) have voted against Cruz and Kasich
And even more have voted against everyone else. Hence the GOPee will have all the reasons in the world to nominate Romney/Ryan for another shot at it and freeing Trump up for his 3rd party run after the RNC breaks their pledge.
I’m actually REALLY looking forward to it at this point to get the General election started with 3 candidates, none of which will be named Cruz.
Even more voted against Cruz, Kasich, Jeb, Rubio, etc.
Trump and his contingent of supporters are burning the bridge before crossing it. The vitriol from the top has trickled-down to all the lower levels. Many more Cruz supporters, while preferring Cruz, will vote Trump. Now there are some Cruzers who bash Trump and say “Never Trump”, but I’m not one of them... I’m hearing most other Cruzers, moi included, have previously, still do, and will vote Trump, should he get the 1237.
The hatred for Trump among the politicos shows us just how corrupt our system is.
The rules are there to keep 30% of Republicans from bulldozing a candidate that 70% of Republicans find unacceptable as a nominee in a race with a wide field.
Reince, that’s horse hockey and even you know it...we know you like to make up rules as you go along, but I’ll call you on this one...show us in writing where any such rule exists, and maybe we’ll listen...
Just think about what you just said...and then try and come up with a logical reason why we should have such things as state by state preliminary voting; your job would be much easier if you just wrangled in private and selected a candidate in July, without disclosing the sordid details...
I’m voting for the nominees versus whomever the dems put up.
Yes and this delusional post is a perfect example.
And what if he loses but isn’t smashed?
Trump has to follow the same rules as everyone else....n0 1237 no nomination!!!
I've said the same for Cruz, and I didn't even qualify it with a "1237" condition, either. My only condition was that whoever the candidate is that eventually gets nominated be one that has been in the race throughout the primary season in its entirety and has faced the voters, continually. No backroom Ryans, Jebs, Mitts, or whoever.
I'm not a proponent of Trump's supposed "plurality demand". But, I can't even find anyone here who can cite an official demand to a convention that has not even convened yet. Speeches, news items, here say and interviews are the evidence, I guess.
My point is that the Trump Hate is strong indeed here. There are literally dozens of Trump hit pieces posted here daily and Cruz proponents use them as a means to belittle and ridicule Trump supporters in very condescending and outright rude manners. What they don't realize is they risk the support of these people should Cruz ever get the nomination.
