ANALYSIS: Donald Trump Grows Weaker, Setting Up Further Republican Chaos

By Rick Klein Apr 5, 2016

Wisconsin will go down as the state that turned the tide –- or that turns the minds of anxious Republicans to what might have been.

Donald Trump’s loss proves a point the anti-Trump forces have been making with varying intensity for months. He was blown out, losing broadly and decisively in a big battleground state, in a winnowed field and in a primary that was open to independents as well as GOP regulars.

“Tonight is a turning point. It is a rallying cry,” Ted Cruz said in declaring victory, in words that his erstwhile enemies in the Republican establishment would gladly endorse at this point in the race.

Trump’s support is stalling among Republican voters, and his failure to close out his rivals speaks to his potential weakness in a general election. Tuesday’s results show the GOP frontrunner can be beaten soundly in places where the case against Trump is prosecuted in a sustained way -– and perhaps helped along when Trump himself plays into those arguments with his own behavior.

With a Trump ceiling coming in to focus, his path to a majority of convention delegates has never been narrower. Strikingly, more than a third of Republicans in Wisconsin exit polls say they’d be scared under a Trump presidency, with another two in 10 saying they’d be concerned. Trump was uncharacteristically silent Tuesday night, as if he had nothing good to say. Cruz is by far the biggest beneficiary of the anti-Trump sentiments. Wisconsin delivered the kind of cross-demographic victory that, to date, only Trump has managed in an electorally significant state.

emotional maturity of a 12 year old.

You give Trump too much credit; he is more like a ten year old. I like the fact that he is not politically correct but the name calling, mockery, insults and smears are just too much.

Your math is faulty. If Donald gets 1237 then he gets the nom. We agree. But if nobody gets 1237, then all those with delegates have chips to bargain with.

We will see if either Cruz or Trump gets 1237. At the convention, the nominee must be one or the other.

No, WI is a stronghold of Mrs. Bill even if she couldn’t win the primary!

Cruz has never exhibited nastiness, name-calling or smears when he has lost.

Bill And Hil are both in questionable health for sure. But the meds she takes help her get through events- that and her pure evil will.

> If Cruz has 11 more Wisconsins, Donald Trump would also be "eliminated", because he could not get to 1237 either.

Not even close to reality.

Before Wisconsin there were 867 delegates remaining.

To reach 1237 delegates Trump required 56% of the remaining delegates.
To reach 1237 delegates Cruz required 88% of the remaining delegates.

After Wisconsin there are 825 delegates remaining.

To reach 1237 delegates Trump requires 58% of the remaining delegates.
To reach 1237 delegates Cruz requires 89% of the remaining delegates.

If Cruz has 11 more Wisconsins he's out. Trump on the other hand would need 80% of remaining delegates, which is less than Cruz needs now.

What did Kasich get last night? 14% ... in a blue state ...

Almost no one will vote for someone who cannot get to 1237. In two weeks Cruz support will tank. He will fight with Kasich for the bottom 20% ...

No one will vote for the second place guy who cannot get there.

Trump’s bad temperament and lack of preparation are becoming more apparent by the day. Sore loser last night.

Usually there would be a bandwagon effect where second- and third-place finishers would back the frontrunner. Here the opposite is the case. Republican voters who don’t like Trump won’t care if their alternative is mathematically eliminated on the first ballot.

Hillary loses the last 6 of 7 primaries but it is Trump who is in trouble for losing one!

Yes, in the next two weeks we will see a completely different narrative.

Trump won 3 out of 4 States on super Tuesday a couple of weeks ago, Cruz won none of them!

That is why these primary battles are good for Trump, he is being prepared for the General election.

Not in NY he isn’t. Cruz didn’t win his home state with over 50%

Trump would kill her in a debate, he wouldn’t play ‘Mr. nice guy’ like Cruz would.
