After hearing from several of their transgender friends that they felt uncomfortable using the bathroom at school, Springfield Central High School seniors Tatieana Lopez and Tiffany Adon decided to do something about it.
Both students are members of the school's Gender Equality Club, and felt that everyone should be able to feel safe using a bathroom.
"We both have a couple of trans friends, and we were told about a couple of intersex students at the school," Adon said. "She (Lopez) talked to a student about how they don't really use the bathroom because they are not comfortable enough. I also had a friend who didn't use the bathroom either because he didn't feel like he could pass as a trans man."
After discussing some options, the students decided to approach the School Centered Decision Making Team, which is made up of teachers, parents, administrators and students.
"They presented this idea to us and there were certainly some concerns, particularly about safety and how we would monitor the use of the bathrooms," said Principal Thaddeus Tokarz. "I have to say that every issue that I presented for them, they were able to come up with a solution."
After scouting the building, the students found two faculty bathrooms on the third floor that could be used as gender neutral bathrooms. The bathrooms were already accessible to anyone with disabilities, so all that was needed were signs identifying the bathrooms as gender neutral.

Lopez will go on to Pace University in New York City, where she will study psychology. Adon plans to study sociology, but is not sure where yet.

A society in an un-recoverable death spiral.
What could possibly go wrong?
Wait a minute! It sounds as if not ALL the bathrooms in this school are “gender neutral.” The intersex community will be seriously offended! I hope the whole Gender Equality Club will be put on trial and executed.
maybe.

I went to Pace. They’re a business college. Psychology? At Pace? money flushed.
I have no transgender friends nor do I want any.
It was single person handicap/faculty bathroom before they got involved. Now I see every student wanting the use the one “nice” bathroom instead of sharing a traditional multi-stall bathroom with other random students.
Well, at least it’s a one-holer that is under lock and key by a teacher, so the “user” is in it by himself/herself. I think the bigger issue is just making an unlocked multi-stall public bathroom available to anyone who wants to use it. That was the issue in Charlotte, NC that prompted the state legislation.
“We both have a couple of trans friends”
Geeze, must be the fad right now.
BTW, the school will still be in the crosshairs of the leftists. They don’t want special bathrooms...they want kids to have no choice.
That’s discrimination against them.
Recall 1950s ‘separate but equal’ ??
Blacks had their own bathrooms back then.
Now they give trans their own??
Transgender students should be allowed to use the girls room, or its discrimination against them
(fortunately I am not a female HAHA)
Or professional victims.
Someone needs to start a “Heterosexual White Male” club, and demand a special bathroom designated just for themselves. When the Gender Equality club whines, point out they have a special bathroom. Either they remove the “gender neutral” bathroom or install a Heterosexual White Male bathroom. Your choice.
The inmates are running the place.
[ Thats discrimination against them.

Irony is lost on all the Social Justice Warriors, they are so oblivious to objective truth they could be told not to stop on train tracks and they would get ran over by a slow moving train.
The real solution would be all uni-sex bathrooms, no segregated bathrooms, that way there is no discrimination or segregation.
I dunno, it sounds like they came up with a logical solution to an illogical problem. At least they didn’t try to force boys into the girls’ spaces...yet.
I went to HS in Mass and we never took showers after gym, just changed in stalls with curtains. So a couple fairies in the locker room would be inappropriate but not hysterically wrong like in some schools.
We’ll see whether this bathroom thing is as far as it goes but like civil unions, it’s probably only a first step. Hope not.
They are actually a good thing. We have them and it’s the only place you can go to take a dump in private.
I see a future of a bathroom hitched to the back of our car so we feel “comfortable” with our own “safe space” when we need a bathroom break. We’ll have a crossword puzzle book in there on a shelf where a phone or pad could also be.
Car bathrooms on wheels for your safety and comfort.
Unless this school is near a known EPA Superfund Site, like the Love Canal, it's time for an investigation to see whether these abnormalities are caused by toxic Massachusetts values or by a toxic environment.
I have major problems “starting my stream” when others are around. Can I have my own bathroom, wherever I go?

Yup a single sink and a single toilet, You could make them quite small and only have ONE handicapped bathroom needed, instead of One special stall per mens and womens room.
Cons: it is gonna cost more for maint and upkeep. You can;t ask a stall mate to send over a spare roll if you run out.
Advantages: When they are cleaning the bathrooms you are not locking out a bunch of people from the bathroom. If one toilet overflown it doesn’t close down the whole restroom.
I myself would love this idea as some of my peers wear so much perfume it can asphyxiate me when I walk into a restroom. Also some people complain that men can be pigs when it comes to the men’s room, I have seem some legendary filth and disgusting messes when it comes to the women’s room. Making separate bathrooms at least makes it so if one room is gross you can try another one and don’t have to be forced to smell the crap while you are using the room. Maybe put a “slider sign” on the bathroom door that says “Cleanup Requested” that you can set if you notice a mess in one of them. That way the janitorial staff can do targets runs on cleaning the restrooms to more efficiently utilize their time.
