New York is likely dropping its “tampon tax”

The New York state senate is poised to eliminate New Yorkers’ so-called “tampon tax.”

Feminine hygiene products are currently taxed as “luxury items” in New York, but a new bill could result in their reclassification as tax-exempt necessities, instead. The Republican-run senate passed the bill unanimously on Monday (April 11) after it had passed the state assembly in March, also with full support from lawmakers. The bill now goes to the state’s governor Andrew Cuomo, a father of three daughters, who has said in the past that the tax should be repealed.

“It is a way of providing some tax relief to women everywhere, young girls in particular,” senator Diane Savino said, according to Politico NY.

This was an issue that should have been promulgated by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, but then she had no use for feminine hygiene products. Now all she needs is dental floss.

This is one of the most stupid initiatives ever. Since it will have minimal impact on family finances (yes, saving that $1.50 a year on sales tax on feminine products makes a big difference!), it is pure political theater. The democrats are using this to make themselves look generous while giving nothing at all.

It is a way of providing some tax relief

So, you admit that the tax burden is something that needs "relief"...

for women everywhere

... for some of the people.

Wow, this is great, taxes going down. Maybe Maryland has some hope of getting rid of the “rain tax”.

“... Maryland has some hope of getting rid of the rain tax”.

Gov. Hogan signed for its repeal on May 12, 2015.

At least she won’t have to worry about where she left her false teeth.

Is toilet paper a luxury item in New York like it is in Venezuela?

Thanks. I have been overseas since last summer and had not kept up on the news. That tax had to have been one of the things which got Hogan elected.

Gotta love that quote. On top of that, who ever classified tampons as a luxury item in the first place?

Women, since the dawn of Time....It’s a 1st world ‘problem’, hence ‘luxury’. Even the pill, unless Rx, is a luxury (body is working as intended).

How ‘bout some relief for MEN? Curves, ‘Ladies Night’, etc. No talk of dropping the condom tax? /s

Yep, more govt meddling in the tax code. No across the board, but more Socialism and carve-outs and exemptions...

When I first heard of the proposal to eliminate the tax on tampons because it was ‘discriminatory’ towards women, I thought it was ridiculous.

However, I don’t think of tampons as being a ‘luxury’ that should be taxed, if discretionary taxes are a part of the state tax code to distinguish between items purchased simply for pleasure and products necessary for health, hygiene and physical well-being.

Of course, I also object to its being used as a play for votes, so the timing sucks, as it’s pretty transparent that this is what it’s all about...

That’s ridiculous.
