One of my doctor clients used to do a lot of TRC evaluations. Most of them stated they are unable to work because they were suffering from anxiety, depression or adult ADHD. He recommended denial of benefits for most of them and stated instead that they should return to work full time, begin a course of individual psychotherapy and engage in a regular exercise program. Too many were going to a lawyer to appeal his recommendations which resulted in a re-evaluation with another physician who always seemed to agree with the applicant, so TRC rarely refers any to him any more.

During my years on the Chicago PD we had plenty of opportunities to chase some 19-20 year old kid 10 blocks.

When we bring him in, we ask, “so do you work?”

“No I’m on SSI Disability”.

How many of those "disabled" people were majoring in Athletics, I wonder?

Same type of experience here. We know people who are “permanently disabled” because they are too fat, drink too much, are drug addicts, just act crazy, or have a history of depression or stress related problems. If the right doctor will say you are “permanently disabled” that's it you win the big prize.

Running!

Those kids must have been late for school.

I don’t think he has the power to do that, Congress has to put in a bill for it.

Wait a minute. I thought we weren’t supposed to think of the disabled as being “lesser” people. Isn’t this basically telling them that they are incapable of taking care of themselves? Aren’t we supposed to encourage them to be all they can be? This sounds awfully demeaning to me.

That was my first thought as well. But evidently Obama is just expanding the meaning of "permanently disabled", a phrase that was already in some tuition-forgiveness law.

So who's gonna stop him from being creative here? No one.

I am a trans-tibial amputee Lost my lower right leg when struck by a driver who left the scene (hit and run). Officially, I am not the victim of a crime and am not disabled. So, these programs can kiss my stump. I’ve paid into the system for 40 years and have never, will never, be paid back. It’s never given me a dime, even when I truly needed it. It’s no surprise to me that few apply and qualify. It’s not set up do help people. These programs are money laundering and crony/cousin employment.

I hear you brother!

I’ve had an arthritic back (#’s 3,4,5 lumbar) since high school. The pain is constant, but only rarely crippling.

When I see “disabled” people snowboarding, sailing, or any other activity I cannot do, for some reason I resent that they are getting a pension *I* pay for, while I slave away in my little world of pain.

Then again, I PITY them, because they will never know the PRIDE of going it alone! I need NOTHING from the govvie, while they are wholly dependent upon it.

Who is the REAL sucker here?

If you are connected to the right govt employee, you too can sign up for a hefty disability check.

This also opens the door for colleges to raise rates to the roof. Uncle Sugar will pick up the tab.

I went to college on the GI Bill (read that “EARNED benefit”) after I retired. I’ve seen lots of these “Professional Students” who had no intention of turning their education/training into a job and many had VERY questionable “disabilities” and this was in 1993/94. I can imagine what it looks like after 7 years of Queen Putt, the Marxist, Mooslim, Kenyan, Steaming Pant Load Sissy Boy.
