Under regulations established in the 1980s, delegates cannot take money from corporations, labor unions, federal contractors or foreign nationals. But an individual donor is permitted to give a delegate unlimited sums to support his or her efforts to get selected to go to the convention, including money to defray the costs of travel and lodging.

There was a time when people could hand out checks on the floor of the Texas legislature. I think some chicken magnate was doing it. I’m not sure it’s illegal now but they stopped doing it because it didn’t look good.

This is true. Amounts too large for these purposes are suspect, however. This rule was made to equalize things, not make them crooked.

But promises made depending on election are illegal.

How do we know what was promised?
