Mom Filmed School Principal Paddling Her Son, Says: 'I Couldn't Do Anything'

A startling video shows a 5-year-old boy getting paddled by his school principal in front of his mom.

Shana Marie Perez, who recorded the footage of her son's punishment, says she's had a long-running dispute with the school principal in Georgia. Her son has had 18 unexcused absences this school year and she was once arrested for his truancy.

She says the school threatened to call the police and have her arrested again if she did not give them permission to paddle Thomas.

She told IE: "I felt like I had no other option. The principal led me to believe that the paddle was the only option."

Perez said her son was "devastated about the whole situation."

"Every time I try to walk up to him he says 'don't hit me, don't hit me,'" she added.

The local sheriff says the school did nothing wrong because paddling is legal in Georgia as long as the parent gives their consent.

The disturbing video is re-igniting an old debate: is paddling really an effective way to punish a child this young?

Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz told IE: "There is really no data to say that corporal punishment effects positive change."

She added: "When you take a kid that is already being oppositional and defiant, now you have taught him that another method of coping is to hit. Chances are you are going to get a child that is going to hit."

The school district says they are investigating the incident and their discipline policies

Except that I would get first crack at it. They could watch me paddle my own kid.

Where did you read that. If it is a regular problem that is strongly suggestive that he needs to be evaluated to find out underlying causes. It could be a health issue, it could be a learning disability.

In truth I do. I also know that many people have no idea just how out of control some young students get. To the point where they present a very real danger to themselves, the teachers, and other students. Most of the time they are ESE which makes disciplining them even trickier and fraught with peril.

At five he very simply may not be ready for school. If there is no dad at home that too could be a big part of his problem and reason for his misbehaving. Dads matter.

Well that was over the top and I withdraw that assertion. It was the comment about “bedroom play” that drew my ire. Which was uncalled for but I should have let it just wash over me.

Either the parent does it or the Principal.
Choice.

She came up with that excuse on Facebook when people started asking her why she let them dpank him. It had the feeling of a lie made up on the fly.

No teacher of administrator should be dishing out physical punishment.

That said, they should be able to expel the kid.

Naa.

You have done zip to earn any deference, pajama boy. You lack the intellect to distinguish between a beating and a spanking, and then you top that off by lacking the integrity to acknowledge that other people might not share your disfunction.

I concur with most of what you write but I have no experience in dealing with ‘soccer moms’ at sporting events. I most assuredly agree that ‘the kids are pampered and indulged and rotten as hell with poor manners’!

I believe the causes are much deeper than just feminism, the ‘wimpification’ of Western Man, and a lack of discipline on the part of the parent(s). I believe those are but symptoms of the real problem.

The real problem in my opinion, is a spiritual problem. In general, Western society has walked away from the Judeo-Christian God and has endorsed philosophies of either ‘man as god’ (atheism), or else ‘god as santa claus’, where God provides our every material desire and, when we say a prayer, we then get a ‘ticket to heaven’ when we die, no pain and no suffering. Hanagraaff describes the latter as ‘the Osteenification of American Christianity’. (Canada, and much of the Western world, too.)

Since we are designed to worship, if we have pushed God out of the picture, or, like the ‘prosperity Gospel’ types, have transformed Him into something unrecognizable in the Bible, we still need to worship something. Often, that becomes ‘the children’, as they are the only ‘legacy’ there is for an atheist. Since the atheist is god, his/her desires and feelings become of paramount importance. Oft lonely, they cling to their ‘legacy’, their kids, spoiling them and failing to discipline them because they don’t want to ‘hurt their feelings’. After all, with no god, ‘feelings’ are paramount!

Driving kids to a public school, I cannot talk about Jesus, but I can try to instill Judeo-Christian values that include respect for self, for others and for others’ property, and I can try to be a good example of a Christian. As far as I know, none on the bus attend church. (Not unusual, as this is Canada, after all.)

One young girl on the bus has a habit of swearing, sometimes taking the Lord’s name in vain. I’ve asked her if she uses such language in school. No. Then why do you use it on the bus? She could not answer. I explained that shouldn’t I, and the other kids get the same respect as the teachers? So far, she hasn’t sworn again in over a month.

I’ve been blessed, in that these kids, though displaying very poor manners, are not ‘bad’ kids, just kids lacking in decent instruction and correction of poor manners. A word of correction usually suffices with these kids. Other drivers have been assaulted and beaten up by some students. I am blessed that I don’t have a route such as that.

Other drivers don’t discipline their ‘kids’ instead, trying to be their ‘friend’, rather than a driver. Like a parent trying to be a ‘friend’ to their kid(s), rather than a ‘parent’, they lose control over the situation. A little while ago, I heard a ‘Focus on The Family’ broadcast where they were discussing ‘trying to raise good adults’ as opposed to ‘trying to raise good kids’. That is what I try to do on my bus. In some small way, to help ‘raise good adults’ who are an asset to society!

Having had experience with a few downright evil, twisted public school officials and teachers, I would never allow them to touch my child. We ain’t in Kansas anymore.
