Rules keep some voters out of New York primary
Chicago Tribune ^ | 4/17/16

As New York prepares for its most meaningful presidential primary in decades, some of the candidates' most passionate supporters are finding out they will be spending Election Day on the sidelines.

Under state rules, only registered Democrats can vote in Tuesday's Democratic primary. And only registered Republicans can vote in the GOP contest.

As for the 3.2 million New Yorkers registered with no party or a minor one, they are out of luck if they want to influence the outcome of the Democratic or Republican races. The deadline to switch to one of the two majors for the purpose of voting in the primary passed without fanfare back in October.

Wait until the Trumpbies find out that NYS recently changed the rules, and that the state GOPe will be picking the delegates instead of the candidates.

NC is also closed, I believe, or was for years.

“only registered Republicans can vote in the GOP contest”

And Trump is like 50-60%. And where’s Lyin’ Ted?

Actually, the rules in NY have been like this for a long while. I tried to switch four months before a LOCAL primary a bit over a year back, and although I thought I was in plenty of time according to the website info, but I got a letter saying I was too late for the primary. I didn’t switch back to conservative because of the issue, and to make certain I would be able to vote in presidential primaries.

libs in NY loathe Cruz.

Wrong. As in the entire Bible Belt, Cruz is loathed by every demographic, including very conservative and evangelical.

The Bible Belt saw through the reptilian charlatan Cruz, and so does New York.

Cruz has collapsed nationally, with polling at an embarrassing 25% as Trump hits 50%.

That slimy pretender Cruz is over and done, thank heavens.

M. Thatcher :" Get ready to be disappointed, then. Cruz is absolutely loathed in New York. Even he has no idea how much."

WRONG !
Cruz is absolutely loathed in New York CITY !.
Once you get 30-40 miles out of NYCity , the State becomes more politically Conservative ,

and one of the reasons why Gov. CUOMO has done little to develope UPSTATE jobs ,economy , energy fuels, etc., etc.
Even the recent "State of the State" address was held in NEW YORK CITY, where Cuomo promised the unions more money, etc., and is trying to out-Socialist, even 'UNCLE BERNIE' !

And the problem with closed primaries is? It would be nice if it were that way in all the states. Open primaries can lead to manipulation by both sides.

Cruz is far from done. He’s 44 years old. This election he made a lot of connections around the country and proved he has a great ground game. Even if he doesn’t get the nomination this year, we will need him big time to run against Hillary on her second term in 2020.

Reagan didn’t win his first run for president either.

Cruz can’t grow a personality and there is no desire to follow him.
He has non of the inspired crowds good candidates get.

Which is why Trump will win handily there. He wins the most conservative demographic in actual elections, as he did in the entire Bible Belt.

Do not try to school me on New York state. I am a New Yorker, born and bred, for 55 years. Recently moved to FL.

I am not a member of any political party. Therefore I am not able to vote in my state primary. I hardly consider that “another move by that lying, cheating, adulterous, vote-stealin, delegate-poachin Canadian double agent.”

He's done this go 'round, which was what I was referring to.

Unfortunately, he may resurrect his reptilian charlatan self for some future run, but he will never escape the nickname "Lyin' Ted" for the rest of his life. Because it's damn accurate.

I wont presume to school you about New York state.
I am a New Yorker, born and bred, for 70 years , and still reside in upstate NY,
and have already been advised by my Governor that my values and attitude are not welcomed in his state, although my tax money is welcomed .
Congratulations on your timely escape !
Keep the light on for me !

Leto : "You are correct, libs in NY loathe Cruz."

You are right, as most of the libs live in New York City, and on Long Island .
The other 1/2 of the total population of the State live 30-40 miles outside of New York CITY and are Conservative.
Unfortunately, Cuomo ran against an unsubsidized Republican candidate (eGOP refused to assist with funds) and won with 55%, squeeking out a victory.

I will definitely keep the light on - the one by the pool!

We escaped the onerous New York taxes in 2009. Highly recommend Florida - it's a wonderful lifestyle, much lower cost of living, and no state taxes! My property taxes went from $28,000 (Chappaqua) to under $8,000 (which is VERY high for the Tampa area, but obviously we are happy with number after being gouged for so many decades). And our Florida house is much larger.

I love New York, and I'll always be a New Yorker at heart – I still travel to the Adirondacks every summer – but paradise here can't be beat.
