Winners or Whiners?
Real Clear Politics ^ | April 19, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

If there is one pattern that is emerging from this year's political campaigns, it is that rhetoric beats reality -- in both parties.

The biggest surprise among the Democrats is Bernie Sanders, and among the Republicans is Donald Trump. Although they are each seeking to be put in charge of the nation's government, does anyone know -- or care -- what their actual track record in government has been?

Trump of course has no track record at all in government. If Sanders has anything to show for his many years in Congress, no one seems to know what it is. But both are great at rhetoric.

Hillary Clinton's biggest selling point is that she has lots of "experience" in government, having been a Senator and a Secretary of State. But what she actually accomplished in those roles gets remarkably little attention.

My apologies.

You are spot on about the vitriol, and not being a Trump supporter, the flak can come in heavy and sometimes you squeeze the trigger too quickly. I think he might do better than 180, but, not by much.

My Dad had me working the Nixon campaign and I cut my teeth on B.B. and National Review.

I can forgive the CSC, signed God, S.J.

Pst! ...you do realize not every building with Trump's name on it belongs to him, nor was his project.

...it's a brand like his cheap wine and bad steaks.

Actually, Trump's wine comes from his own vineyard and is held in high regard.

So you support the lyin cheat named Cruz? A guy who can't win the vote but depends on poaching delegates, then jumps up and down claiming, “I'm winning! I'm winning!” Good for you!

My Dad worked on the Goldwater campaign when I was a kid. It was really an awful thing to know that he and others were so dedicated to a candidate who was so thoroughly thrashed.

Since that time, I spent a lot of time looking over the candidates before pledging support, but in the end, it usually seems we end up voting for that candidate who is the least objectionable. Maybe that's a bad theory and the Trumpists are onto something. I'm fine with a lot of things the guy says and then suddenly he goes off the reservation.

And for heaven's sake, you apologized.....for what? Your commentary about bane/bane was hardly the type of vitriol I was referencing.

Lastly, I sent my kids to a SJ high school (two of three went to a CSC university, while the other went to an SJ university). While they got a very good education, only one is what I would call a practicing Catholic. We tried hard when they were young, but I'm torn as to what happened. Was it the SJ/CSC influence or just where society seems to be headed. Secularism is rampant in America and I fear they are headed there as well.

Cheers....ig

>> Voters should reject all of the candidates and ask for a new slate <<

Good idea.

But maybe we should also fire all the voters.

(On the other hand, whether to replace them with new voters is another question altogether. Not yet sure where I’d come down on that one!)

>> Appealing to the gut not the mind <<

Yes, by all means, let’s not be taken in by reason and logical thinking. They are only playthings for ivory tower denizens like Tom Sowell and his fellow GOPe shills, especially self-important pundits like Walter Williams and Milton Friedman, men who claim to have figured out how our economy should function — that is, by using free markets and all such stuff.

As a matter of fact, other than showing us how to (a) generate electricity, (b) master manned flight, (c) split the atom, (d) win WW2, (e) develop the Internet, (f) decode the genome and (g) send men to the Moon, I can’t think of much that reason and logical thinking have ever contributed to the USA. The “gut” is clearly a much better guide for our political leaders.

>> don’t believe Trump will do much in a general election. I’ll say he might get 180 electoral votes if nominated <<

I think your estimate is overly generous. But even with as many as 180, I believe there would be every prospect for the Dhimmis to gain control of the House, the Senate and the Supreme Court.

Gut/instinct and logic/reason are not mutually exclusive.

Effective people use both.

People buy with their gut, after considering facts and reason.
Instinct/gut incorporates the mind...it doesn’t exclude it.

Liberals make decisions using their felings, of course Trump has been a central planning big gov lib all his adult life as a crony capitalist. It is discouraging to see so many who self identify as conservatives fall for this con.

Sorry for having overestimated the intelligence of many conservatives here.

I think the real “whiners” are people that can’t win at the ballot box and still try to slime their way to what they want, in broad daylight in front of everyone. As if it’s going to be forgotten.

You thinking is very flawed. The real whiners are those like 4 yr olds who complain about the rules when they start losing. They cry and stomp their feet.

Stomp your feet all you like, no one is voting for your guy.

His entire campaign is a tantrum at this point.

No stomping at all, I don’t whine about cheating I expect my candidate to wear his big boy pants unlike trump diapers.

Why whine about cheating when your opponent is just killing you at the ballot box?

Which one of these? Be specific. And if he didn't build, renovate or own them, how did his name get on them?
