Republican establishment warms to Trump after big New York win

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (Reuters) - U.S. Republican officials began meeting on Wednesday, a day after Donald Trump's crushing victory in a New York presidential nominating contest, and said he has been winning growing acceptance within their ranks - but they want to see the billionaire do more to mend fences with the party establishment.

Trump, the front-runner to become the Republican presidential candidate in November's election, was the focus for the party's spring meeting of 168 Republican National Committee (RNC) members in Hollywood, Florida. The three-day conclave at an oceanside resort will take stock of the race for the White House and prepare for a possible contested convention in July in Cleveland.

The New York real estate mogul's win Tuesday in his home state over rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich was an important milestone for RNC members, who said it could put him on a pathway to acquire the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination outright without a contested convention.

"There are a fair number of RNC members who were discounting his chances of success when we met in January and now see that he’s building a substantial lead and may in fact get to 1,237 before we get to the convention," said Steve Duprey, an RNC member from New Hampshire.

"The New York results were such an overwhelming win," Duprey said. "It's impressive. That's what I've heard people talking about."

Trump is GOPe!!!!! What? It worked for Cruz, right?

If the GOPe is cozying up to Trump it must mean he's one of them, right?

Trump supporter equivocation in 3...2...1...

Meanwhile - from the article: but they want to see the billionaire do more to mend fences with the party establishment.

Cruz has mended some GOPe fences to "get their support as their savior" because they know Trump will lay the biggest hurting on the establishment and Cruz is their best chance to not be totally destroyed as an entrenched betrayer of those they claim to represent.

Some of you "Cruz or Lose"rs are so funny the way you ignore the facts because they work against you.

Just...wow.

This, from a Trump supporter, willing to ignore 60 something years of Trump's liberalism, willing to ignore recent liberal and just generally ignorant statements, willing to ignore his tantrums and outbursts, willing to ignore FreeRepublic's long history of supporting conservatism in exchange for some cult-of-personality, join-the-"in"-crowd, populism.

You missed the point - the guy I responded to tried to make it look like, instead of seeing the writing on the wall, the GOPe decided trump is one of them. If one has been paying attention, they have actually decided that Cruz is a closer fit and have been rooting for him to stop Trump - so they can try to dump them both.

I point out that the GOPe is begging Trump to throw them a bone - something the other guy and evidently you seem to have missed.

I guess it's OK for Cruz guys to ignore that he has lost but has opted to stick around and muddy the waters in hopes of a bone being tossed to him from the GOPe, because "he's the only guy (who is losing) that can win this thing and be the Champion of the People (whose votes he wants to ignore)"....and then they claim that Trump's ego is too big.

Republican establishment has it’s spring meeting in Hollywood, FL? That’s the most Democrat city in the most Democrat county in the state. These people are idiots. Born to lose.

The escorts are affordable there I imagine.

How quickly things change. One big primary and Cruz is looking like the underdog again.

The sex scandal stuff never went away. I keep hearing stuff from my friends in DC about it.
