Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Posted on 04/21/2016 10:32:44 AM PDT by writer33

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

“Are you going to condemn a woman to death if her pregnancy carries extreme risk?”

No. With my comment I was trying to support your position, or at least what I thought it was.

Great point.

“At some point the references to Cruz is going to have to stop being the go to response.”

That has been the meme on Free Republic for far too long.

Even though you are for Trump you get it. It’s almost automatic that any time something bad comes out about Trump, the trumpers fly into a rage about Cruz.

Sometimes, they go into the, “well, but ...” but Cruz is the ‘go to.’

Do you really think the pro-life movement is going to find common ground with abortionists by adding incest and rape as reasons for allowing the murder of the pre-born? If so, you're delusional. The only way abortion is going to be stopped is for the courts and the public to finally decide to protect the rights of the pre-born.

And if you think the American public (or just Republicans... or probably even the evangelical subset) are going to let the pro-life movement tell their young daughter that she has to give birth to a child conceived by a brutal rape... you are delusional.

I'd like to see Roe overturned and these decisions made by the states, which I think is the best reasonable outcome that can be hoped for.

You’re talking about subtlety and deal making to advance your agenda.

Doncha know real conservatives don’t compromise or make deals?? It’s all or nothing! That’s why they’ve been so successful in defunding planned parenthood and overturning Roe V Wade.

The other side refuses to compromise and they get everything they want. We compromise our beliefs and values over and over in the hopes we will seem more acceptable to others. It is this lack of conviction that has lost much more ground than any strident stand for any position.

Watch what happens when he is placed in the role of Chief Executive.

Outcomes WILL change.

Just so folks know, Trump is suggesting the overturn of the 1984 Reagan pro-life plank, which recognizes the Fourteenth Amendment personhood of EVERY child.

The powers-that-be in the GOP have watered down that plank with stupid, immoral, unconstitutional regulatory provisions that are counter to the above, but this move by Trump destroys the Reagan plank once and for all.

A little history might be helpful:

In 1989, the pro-abort forces in the Republican party decided they wanted to get rid of the pro-life plank. Roger Stone and his then wife Ann, founded the Republicans for Choice dedicated to the proposition that the entire pro-life mentality in the Republican party needed to go. Phyllis Schlafly and her Eagles formed the Republican National Coalition for Life and intended to protect and shore up the pro-life plank. Each convention after that a possible battle in the platform committee was alleviated because EF did their homework and won the battle over the likes of Roger Stone, his Republicans for Choice and Karl Rove.

For Trump to think that he can just snap his fingers and make his will that of the RNC Platform shows his true ignorance of how things work. Our platform is a result of the grassroots beginning in the precinct and district conventions making their opinions known that then go to the state conventions and then onto the RNC platform committee.

Today, after many years of tweaking that original 1984 pro-life platform, our plank is actually stronger than the one written in 1984.

It is foolish of anyone to think that they can just come in at the end process at the national convention and make major changes. That is how they do it in the DNC. Maybe Trump ought to go over there.

In fact that was Reagan's position stated or not.

Oh I even go tge way of the catechism on this. Which does not go with trump on it

But the GOP is not pro life.

Kasich won’t hike my taxes. Trump said he would.

The national debt is now $19 trillion. I have news for you. If Kasich wins, or Trump, or Cruz, or Bernie, or Hillary, or if Abe Lincoln hops out of the grave in a miraculous comeback....our taxes ARE going UP!

let’s get on with building the wall, killing terrorists and turning around the economy I'm still waiting for him to elaborate on how he's going to do any of those high-level platitudes, too. Can you enlighten those of us that may have missed it, between his flip flopping around on the pavement about...well...everything?

Wow, that’s the best summation I’ve ever seen. Seriously, well done. They’ve been playing us as useful idiots for decades on this issue.

And yet Roger Stone and Phyllis Schlafly both support Trump.
Strange bedfellows indeed.

The point is, Republicans dumped traditional values decades ago and they have all been lying to get Christian votes.

Trump just tells the truth.

What is the customary waiting time before those of us predicting and pointing out Trump’s liberalism get to start saying “I told you so”?

“1.5 million innocent people are killed yearly in this country. What has any republican done about it?”

Exactly! they ‘talk’ about it. Apparently that’s all that’s needed, using the correct ‘speech.’ Trump doesn’t use the correct ‘speech’ and that’s enough to send the Trump-haters into another spin.

They must be really dizzy today.

Are we so morally bankrupt that we're now only worried about expediency (i.e. political advantage and disadvantage)? Isn't there place for saying that Donald Trump is MORALLY WRONG in this position of his?

Trump could advocate for seizing homes via eminent domain to pay for socialized medicine for union workers' abortions while yelling "Hail, Satan!" and a bunch of people here would still scream about how "conservative" he is because he has, after decades, started to pay some lip service to immigration issues (although he favors amnesty)
