As he gets closer to the GOP nomination Donald Trump is beginning to look like a political chameleon, adapting his campaign to more aptly fit the mold of a party nominee.
It's a big step for Trump and appears to be a departure from his usual campaign practices as it is in fact a move that candidates often make.
Describing how it is typical of candidates, especially those who secure the nomination, to "pivot towards," the general electorate, Daniel P. Franklin, Associate Professor of Political Science at Georgia State explained the candidates go from appealing to the center of the party to the center of the general electorate.
Trump, Franklin said, is transitioning from a running a populist campaign to a standard campaign.

I don’t buy it. Whatever else he is, Donald Trump is not stupid, and you’d have to be pretty stupid to try the same tactics that worked so well (not!) for Mitt “Etch-a-Sketch” Romney.
