Go ahead, Donald, get 1,237; it won't matter: RNC delegate

Supporters cheer for republican presidential candidates Donald Trump

Donald Trump may be the only Republican presidential candidate who can realistically hit the magic 1,237 number for the majority of delegates, but according to a senior Republican National Committee official that does not mean he will become the GOP presidential nominee.

Curly Haugland, a longstanding RNC official and an unbound delegate from North Dakota who will be on the convention rules committee in July, told CNBC that attaining 1,237 during the primaries does not secure the nomination.

"Even if Trump reaches the magic number of 1,237 the media and RNC are touting, that does not mean Trump is automatically the nominee," Haugland said. "The votes earned during the primary process are only estimates and are not legal convention votes. The only official votes to nominate a candidate are those that are cast from the convention floor."

Haugland explained the primary number is really an estimate. That's because the eligibility of some delegates in how they are voted in could be questioned and their status may not be considered valid, Haugland said.

"Remember every state has a different delegate allocation process," he said. "Delegates are picked up in state contests that can be winner take all, open primaries, and remember there are seven states that allow the candidates to pick their own delegates. Until those delegate challenges are settled, there is no 1,237."

Haugland said he expects the delegates won in winner-take-all states to be most likely challenged. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI). RNC shoots down plan to shift power to the delegates

Hitting 1,237 in the primaries does not mean the candidate would automatically become the GOP presidential nominee.

"You become the presumptive nominee when you get 1,237 bound delegates," RNC spokesman Lindsay Walters told CNBC. "You officially become nominee when you have 1,237 votes on the floor of the convention."

Trump has been contesting the delegate appropriation methods, accusing the Ted Cruz campaign of stealing delegates in Louisiana and Colorado. The Trump campaign has said it is considering challenging the seating of the Colorado delegation at the July convention. In March, a Trump senior adviser confirmed the campaign was moving on its plan to contest delegates in Louisiana after Trump won the state's primary but received fewer delegates than Cruz.

The Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment about Haugland's assertions.

Reince pretty much said the same thing. The party is embarrassing themselves. If it were Jeb in Trump’s place the party would have knocked out cruz and kasich by now.

> “Do Republican ELECTED SENATORS and ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES understand that if Trump reaches 1237 and then is dumped that they will be DESTROYED in November, as there is NO WAY that we Trump people are about to pull the lever for ANY REPUBLICAN at any level, if the party denies him the nomination.”

Many GOP members of Congress are actually democrats with an ‘R’ by their names. Seriously. Some of them are even ‘former’ democrats.

The money that funds their lifestyle does not come from Congressional pay. It comes in myriad ways through a lobbying network of more than 50,000 lawyers.

They really don’t care if you vote GOP or not. You may have heard some talk about running a 3rd party themselves. They exist only to give an llusion of a 2-party system.

What changed everything was in 2010 when the Fed started to indirectly monetize the US Debt. Then Congress became detached from its constituents financially although they still talk the talk to prevent an uprising. Most of them know how to talk to push your buttons but they are not true believers. They are liars.

Seriously things have changed and Citizens United helped solidify it all. CU was supposed to be a conservative victory because it supposedly leveled the playing field for the right against the left who were funded by union dues, forced or not. But conservatives were snookered by CU. Donald Trump has called for CU to require disclosure of who the donors actually are. If we knew how they were now, the GOP would be gasping to breathe. Soros, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Mexico, China and a whole lot of very bad characters are in the business of buying GOP politicians. You would not believe some of the GOP members who have actually been bought off.

Yes, everything has changed. It started with the Fed and has grown exponentially under Citizen’s United.

I just registered Republican in the state of Oregon so I can vote for Trump in the primary. I am looking forward to this “official” being put out of business.

All the stealth Cruz delegates will help write and vote on the rules at the convention. The delegate shenanigans is not just about 1st or 2nd ballot. Cruz is a scum.

The only reason I am a registered republican is so I can vote in the primaries.

I am a big Cruz supporter. But If Trump ( or Deceiving Donnie as Trump would most certainly put it if he was on the other side) gets the 1237 delegates before the convention - then he should ABSOLUTELY get the nomination. No ifs, ands, or buts.

He is running for the Republican nomination, under the Party's rules. If he gets the delegates - but not the nomination, The Republican party would be forever ruined. ( even more than Trump is ruining it now) And they would deserve it. I could not support the party either.

It would be just like Trump not having the required delegates before the convention, and getting outmaneuvered in the convention and therefore losing the nomination - but then running 3rd party. He in that instance would forever ruin the republican party and give Hillary the nomination. It would be equally as egregious as Trump getting the required delegates before the Convention, but not getting the nomination.

Citizens United was victory for free speech. That decision upheld disclosure requirements. If you want more disclosure, look to Congress and the States; Citizens United is no impediment.

Super uber RINO Tom Ridge was on CNN this morning saying Trump will never be the nominee and he will try everything in his power to nominate Kasich. He goes on to say no way in hell would he ever vote for Donald Trump even if he got the nomination. So Tom Ridge is a Hillary Clinton supporter. The entire GOP would much rather have Clinton win than Trump, that’s why it’s either Cruz or Kasich at the convention. They know both would get destroyed by Clinton. Trump can beat her and their way of life is finished.

The problem with Trump going third party is he doesn’t have the time to get on the ballot after a convention loss. In Texas you have to have 80,000 signatures to get on the ballot...and you have to have them by late April or May. LONG before the convention. Most states are that way...making anything other than a write in campaign all but impossible.

How does that POS RINO plan to stop Trump? Trump has revealed an authoritarian streak running through the Republican Party and the fascist pigs in the party won't forgive him. We the People thank him.

Well DUH!

We know the vote has to occur on the floor at the convention in order for the nomination to be official.

Geez! The MSM is stirring this division for all it’s worth. Not everything about the process is a controversy.

This is not a big deal.

All Donald would have to do is ask all the people that attended his many rallies to come to Cleveland and give the RNC a piece of their minds

“Haugland is NOT claiming that, if Trump actually receives 1237 delegate votes on the floor, he would be denied the nomination. “

Exactly!

Don’t go hating on Mr Haugland. The media knows this is a sensitive issue and they are milking it for all the drama they can get.

Please, keep the heads cool. This is not a newsflash.

Somebody call Tom Ridge a whhhaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance.

Dear GOPe idiots: Trump is the messenger. You can go on railing against the fact that you have alienated over half your base. But it’s your base you have a problem with.

How about some humility, some leadership?

Take some time to listen to people’s concerns?

But of course if you really cared anything about America’s concerns, and had an ounce of leadership, you never would have ended up in this position in the first place.

So, continue to try and suppress the revolt. You’ll only make it worse. But I suppose it’s GOPe’s only hope.

So...they say you HAVE to get to 1237 to get the nomination. Then they say even if you do, it may not matter.

Why even have rules if they don’t matter? This is why I hate the GOPe. They are part of the same cabal known as the democRATS.

CU is fine as free speech but it was not legislation, it was a court case.

The unintended consequence of CU was that it allows secret donors to buy off politicians.

So we need legislation to follow on the heels of CU to correct that unintended consequence. That’s what Trump is saying.

Try to understand the “Law Of Unintended Consequences”. Seriously, it’s worth your while.

https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-best-examples-of-the-law-of-unintended-consequences-in-action

Here’s a good example related to the STS Mission Planning (Space Shuttle) that happened more than 30 years ago:

A very large spy satellite to be designed and launched in record time from Florida was given priority at highest levels. All other funding and missions in the way were put on the back burner.

Satellite was in a secret hangar complex in Los Angeles and was to be assembled, tested and put on a series of wide-load tractor trailers at a secret time and date, at night and then transported to a military air base loaded onto a C-5 Galaxy and flown to Florida.

Engineers and assemblers inside the secret hangar worked around the clock to meet the schedule deadline. Finally, when assembly and testing were finished, the satellite was set on its designed dollies at night and rolled to the hangar door which was opened.

There was a problem. The hanger door opening was too small.

The side of the hangar door was all welded steel and riveted aluminum. The hangar door side would have to be demolished and demolition could risk damage to the satellite. A shield for the satellite would take weeks to design and construct. The demolition of the hangar door side would also take weeks.

The launch date would be missed. The flag officer in charge of the screwup was lambasted by other flag officers in charge of other secret programs. Heads rolled.

CU was a great victory for conservatives but look at the unintended consequences. GOP members of Congress are selling out the country. Their secret donors lay hidden.
