Hewitt: Doubtful that Trump reaches 1,237 delegates, unless a ‘political asteroid’ hits California

Radio host Hugh Hewitt joined MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki Thursday morning to discuss what many have already predicted will happen, including Hewitt, when the GOP descends into Cleveland for their convention in July: a contested convention. Not only that, but Hewitt said that there’s no way Donald Trump gets to 1,237 delegates, even with the rosiest of scenarios for the slate of northeastern primaries next Tuesday, Indiana in May, and California in June. There are 15 states left in the GOP primary season.

Hewitt said he went state-by-state and gave Trump very generous amounts of delegates in his projection, including 51 of 59 of Indiana’s slate. Trump needs 392 delegates to clinch the nomination. Hewitt said Trump probably wouldn’t get any delegates in Nebraska, South Dakota, or Montana, which means in 14 out of the 15 contests left, the billionaire would only get 273–and it’s doubtful he will do well in California, in which he would need to win 119 of the 172 delegates in that contest. He added that it’s doubtful that Trump would get any more than 100 by the time Cruz, Trump, and Kasich duke it out in The Golden State, unless a “political asteroid” occurs.

I think the political asteroid just hit Ohio, with the apparent Mexican cartel murder of 8 family members.

This isn’t going to be automatic one way or the other. If Cruz wins Indiana and does o.k. in California, the Cruz forces a second ballot (unless something really unusual happens). If Trump wins Indiana and/or does very well in California, Trump, then Trump wins of the first ballot (unless something really unusual happens).

BOTTOM LINE: Neither side should tai anything for granted.

Yea true.. But Hewitt is much much more likely to be wrong and that doesn’t help him at all... I don’t know, he has to be delusional unless he is getting money from advertisers friendly to the establishment.. Those are the only two theories that make any sense to me...

“But Hewitt is much much more likely to be wrong and that doesn’t help him at all...”

It helps him.

He doesn’t get paid to be right. He gets paid to be a propagandist for Salem Communications.

“unless he is getting money from advertisers friendly to the establishment.”

Well I guess if they can buy $500,000 worth of Mark Levin’s book, they can do the same for Hewitt.

That may be the calculation that Hewitt is making.. But, I have a hard time imagining being made a complete fool of, as being good for his career.

I thought is was interesting that he didn’t have a problem going out on a limb on CA., but gave Trump 51 in Indiana. That tells me that Indiana is not going to be another Wisconsin.

The other thing is, if Trump goes into CA needing 100 or less, are the anti-Trump willing to drop 10-20 million in ads there. It’s a very expensive state to advertise in. They didn’t do it NY. It will be interesting to see how much they put in PA.then IN.

I will put aside for a minute that Cruz is now mathematically eliminated... But, would you agree if Cruz loses Indiana, that he needs to drop out?

There might be truth to that. But look at Erick Erickson or Ben Shapiro. They more than made themselves look like complete idiots. They still have jobs, no problems. Shapiro’s job is funded by a Ted Cruz donor and I think Erickson’s by Salem Communications.

Yea.. losers like erickson will have a job.. but have lost even more credibility... To begin with, no one took him seriously and now people take him less seriously... I don’t believe there is any way you can look at George Will, Rick Wilson or Bill Kristol etc.. and say “Yea.. these pundits know people and we need to listen to them so we can figure out what the voters will do” lol

The GOPe think Kasich can beat Hillary because of the polls. Yet the polls show that if the leader of the primary is not the nominee the voters will not vote for a second ballot nominee. And if that is Kasich he will lose in the general election.

Is anyone keeping "score" on who has made these predictions here and outside FR?

If so, it would be interesting to see a recap when Trump makes his 1237 number.

I remember when Hewitt went after Trump about his taxes, and Trump told him no one listens to his show. Hewitt went from looking so smug to looking like he just bit into a lemon.

Can we aim it at Sacramento, or Frisco?
I would prefer Sacramento when the full legislature is in session.
