How Cruz Took Down Trump: An Interview With a Delegate
The Huffington Post ^ | April 26, 2016 | by John A. Tures

My local congressional district became one of those battlegrounds that we see playing out across the country, as Ted Cruz supporters outflank Donald Trump backers at the little-known, little-attended Republican Party meetings to select delegates to the national convention. Here's one delegate's story of how it all went down.

Q: Who won the district? If Trump won it, why didn't pro-Trump delegates win at the meeting?

A: The primary dictates how the delegates are to vote on the first ballot. It doesn't dictate who the people are that are elected to represent the convention body at the RNC.

Q: Did any Trump supporters show up? How did they take the results?

A: I would estimate that of all the delegates casting votes, approximately 20% to 25% were Trump supporters. They were understandably upset that their slate did not get approved by the convention body. I spent most of the morning explaining to the leader of their group exactly what was going on and how things were going to move forward. I wanted to make sure they were comfortable with understanding the process.

Q: Why do you think the results went down the way they did?

A: The delegates wanting to support Trump were just late getting involved in the process. I don't think the campaign fully understood how important the actual delegates could be if it came down to a brokered convention. Once it became obvious that the convention may go that route, it was too late to start the process. The delegate process started with mass precinct meetings in February. In February it looked like Trump would easily walk away with the nomination.

After today, Cruz will be finished. Both Cruz and Kasich should call it quits.

Then it's just a retail operation representing a few Made Guy insiders, trying to market themselves to the rubes.

Screw them. They can nominate whoever the hell they want to, and they can dry up and blow away along with the Whigs, the AIP, the greens and every other irrelevant fringe group.

That is the money quote. You are right it is rigged against anyone new to the process.

I don't listen to Rush anymore. I turned him for just a few seconds while driving, and I was immediately deluged by Rush attempting to justify the shenanigans by Cruz to “win” voter-less primaries. Rush was straining to legitimize this farce, giving us the same old song and dance about how us rubes don't understand “The Process” and how it is “ignorance” of us rubes that is the real problem.

If they knew what they were doing they would have been ready when they needed to be.

These stupid games are meaningless. Trump will win the first ballot.

Cruz and Kasich are losers. After the first ballot is over throw them in a FEMA camp and lock the gate.

Correct, generally after the first ballot. It's been that way all your life. And your parents life. Grandparents too. Possibly even your great-great-grandparents life.

I may turn Rush on today to see if he admits the CO fiasco was a corrupt mess. But I’m not sure I could stomach the first hour of him not-talking-about-himself in his one-sided conversations with himself...

Wouldn't you expect a serious presidential candidate to have a Plan B? Or is having a Plan B "stupid" and "meaningless"?

Since my G-G-Grandfather was an Abolitionist who was one of the original Republicans - he was a Southerner who moved to the Free State of Iowa in 1852 in opposition to slavery - I'm sure he would have known and participated.

But I doubt it was as perverted a process as we see now, and I really don't care that "it's been that way for a while". And no, we don't have to just accept it. What we are seeing now is the problem with operating that way: someone can game the system.

So once again Mr. Go-Along-To-Get-Along...the Stupid Party can either change to reflect its constituents interests or...dry up and blow away.

So do you want all delegates to stand firm on their designated candidate throughout the convention ballots? Or perhaps we nominate the GOP candidate by popular vote in all states and territories?

What is your plan to “un-rig” the system?

Cruz took down Trump in his dreams. Certainly not in real life.

He keeps lying about 5 elections, one in North Dakota. There WAS NO ELECTION IN NORTH DAKOTA!!! Ted lies! and no one calls him on it. Disgusting. Imagine four years of that. Ted’s said many thing as stupid as Obama’s “57 states comment” but with calculation and deliberation.

As long as the voters doing the vote are registered Republicans, why yes. That's the way to do it.

And was probably the intent all along. A system that allows the loser to come in and wheedle a few weak sisters to vacillate and change is a sick system.
