The Unfavorability Illusion
Scott Adams' Blog ^ | April 26th, 2016 @ 9:58am | Scott Adams

Now let’s talk about Trump’s sky-high unfavorability rating that hovers around 70%. Trump haters use that figure as their last hope. No one can get elected with such high negatives, they say.

That is cognitive dissonance. And it is one of the cleanest examples you will ever see. I’ll tell you why.

...

When the race gets down to a clean Trump versus Clinton contest, and people realize there are no other options, the comparison changes. Trump wins the matchup against “crooked Hillary” with ease, based on skill, not policies. You haven’t even imagined that contest yet. Your brain won’t let you.

Trump does NOT win against your imaginary unicorn candidate that is a conflation of good qualities from other people. But that unicorn won’t be running against him.

You’re already hearing the word “landslide” applied to the upcoming Republican primaries. By October you will hear that Trump is “running unopposed” for all practical purposes.

Wholeheartedly agree with this analysis and have since last summer. Trump will be running against the Witch not some imaginary cardboard madonna. She’s loathesome. Weenie always loses one on one.

Politics always is the choice of lesser evils, in this case the less unlikable.

My data is purely anecdotal: I’m a strong conservative. Neither I, nor my wife, will cast a vote for trump.

YMMV.

If Trump is the ‘Pub nominee — and looking likely that he will be — I think he’ll do much better with women than the talking heads might predict. More will go for the strong, protective male over the hatched-faced enabler of an impeached serial rapist and sexual assault felon. Like every ‘Pub, he’ll lose the black vote big time. What’s worrisome is his standing with the Hispanics; believe that’s the wild card. Don’t know if the white, blue collar male crossover vote will be enough to counterbalance.

Excellent take, once you isolate Trump vs. Clinton it brings things into sharper focus.....

A lot of blacks and hispanics will be voting for Trump.

You’re only pretending to be a strong conservative. Your kind of thinking gave us Obama.

Your screen name says it all. A Cuban prefers a Cuban not an American for president...

Every time I read his blog I come away thinking Scott Adams is the only one who really understands Trump.

If Trump’s unfavorable were so high he would not be winning the GOP nomination. Its simply untrue.

That is cognitive dissonance. And it is one of the cleanest examples you will ever see.

He may have an argument that the negatives won't ultimately matter, but he doesn't have a clue what cognitive dissonance means. The worries about the unfavorables may be overblown, misplaced, or not fully considered, but people who worry about those negatives are not suffering a mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs (i.e. cognitive dissonance).

Another example of an argument that could have been made without gratuitous attempts at personal insult.

Maybe, but polls don’t show that now. Maybe when it’s Trump vs. PIAPS.

Trump could win Sanders supporters (young people) by coming out in favor of legal weed and inexpensive or free college. Add some support for universal healthcare (better than Obamacare), some job promises, and you’re almost there.

I'll say it again. Just from an optics POV, Trump is attacking massive crowds like a rock star. Historic record turnouts for the GOP primary. He projects leadership and winning at his overflowing rallies. He is the man of the year, the man of this election cycle and definitely the man of the moment. He is the man to clean shop in DC and to change the direction of the country back onto the right course.

Contrast that with Hillary, with crowds that are way down for the DemocRATS. She can't put away the communist "democratic socialist" in her own primary? Her stump speeches have the odor of the same old, same old political slogans and liberal solutions that have never worked and will make things worse. If nothing else, her screeching, fingernails-across-the-chalkboard, irritating voice is enough to kill any candidate. She's having trouble attracting women of either party, I read yesterday. Her coughing fits are concerning with regards to her health. And then, of course, we have her real negatives, like the use of a private computer server for official State Department business and the release of top secret and national security related emails, with the threat of multiple FBI investigations and and possible DOJ indictment. Her and her husband's money-laundering Clinton Foundation is also being investigated too.

Once this becomes a general election contest between just Hillary and Trump, Hillary will be toast. The Donald will "Trump" all over her. Trump will win going away in the fall.
