The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill naming the bison a "historical symbol," and moving it closer to being an official national symbol.
The National Bison Legacy Act was passed in a bipartisan effort, and is expected to be passed in the Senate this week and signed by President Barack Obama. The legislation will move the animal that most Americans call buffalo, and was once near extinction in the late 1800s, into equal status with the bald eagle as a symbol of the country.
"The bison will serve as a great national symbol for the United States as it is as strong as the oak, fearless as the bald eagle and inspiring as a rose," said Cristian Samper, Wildlife Conservation Society president.
The bald eagle has been the national symbol of the country since 1782. The national tree is the oak, and the rose is the nation's national flower.
Samper said the making the bison a national emblem will be a major turning point in efforts to "prevent the bison from going extinct and to recognize the bison's ecological, cultural, historical and economic importance to the United States."
The legislation to have the bison designated a national symbol is also a major triumph for conservationists, ranchers and native American groups. Bison have become good business for some ranchers and the mammal remains a powerful figure in tribal cultural beliefs.
The bison was a victim of expansionist gun-toting WASP interlopers but came back from the brink and is now speaking truth to power by challenging the privileged position of the chickenhead eagle as national symbol.
buffalo crap, this is the toe in the door for EPA and Wildlife to control ranchers and farmers.
I don’t object. Put the buffalo back on the nickel.
And on the grill.
Yes, make bacon a national symbol!!
Oh, never mind.
Not sure I agree and then there is this as a followup.
Yep, they’re “getting things done” now!
I hope that was said in sarcasm. Ungirtunately, this probably true. More fawning idiocy from the GOPe.
How dismantling Obamacare instead? Just saying...
Ironically the Bison is an appropriate symbol for what is happening to the US. A once strong species almost driven to extinction. Also works for white males in America.
They finally passed a bill Obama would sign. See what “reaching across the aisle” can do?
I guess this was something that was really important to some ***hole. This country is so messed up.
Sure glad there are no more important matters that the House needs to address.
Better yet, why not replace Jackson with a buffalo on the front of the twenty dollar bill. They could also put a bunch of “men” standing in line and waiting to use the ladies room on the back.
The bison in National Parks over populate and crowd the park fences. The Parkies don’t keep the fences in good order and the bison leave the park to damage private ranch properties (fences, hay stacks) and spread disease to cattle herds. Under this legislation, I doubt that a rancher will be able to kill marauding bison. Sure hope our Senators have some good sense and kill this bill.
Why not - bullsh*t is an official congressional product.
buffalo have black kinky hair — hmmn
Bison are herd animals, just like sheep. Eagles are free individuals.
