Trump Endorser Bobby Knight: 'I Don't Know What a Conservative Is'

Donald Trump scored a major endorsement from a very beloved Indiana hero, Hoosier basketball coach Bobby Knight. The endorsement serves to give an important boost to help Trump win the state in his march to the nomination. But on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon Thursday when asked to respond to critics that suggest Trump was not a real conservative Knight admitted, “You know, I'm not sure what a conservative is.”

“I don't know whether a conservative is a guy that goes to bed too early or maybe doesn't sleep long enough or just what the hell he might be,” the coach explained. “I don't know. Maybe he's a guy that -- you know, he just wants to be real quiet. I don't know what a conservative is,” he continued.

I would point out at least two present issues with your list vis-a-vis what a 21st century conservative should be. 1. Communism is pretty much dead, and this tenant provides little guidance. 2. “American exceptionalism” sounds an awful lot like “manifest destiny” and an invitation to American hegemony. Moreover, it sounds trite and hypocritcal when used by a country that hasn’t walked the walk since RR left office.

What’s a “conservative?” Ask a “Paleo-Conservative.” Pat Buchanan knows, and Donald Trump listened:

“Can anyone argue that our interventions to overthrow regimes and erect democratic states in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen have succeeded and been worth the price we have paid in blood and treasure, and the devastation we have left in our wake?

Pat is a terrific guy, lifelong conservative patriot, and also meets the 11 criteria posted elsewhere in this thread. And he was purged from the movement he helped start by the neocons. So if Knight is confused about what the term “conservative” means, he’s certainly not ignorant, nor is he alone. Go Trump!

After watching “consistent conservative” Ted and his supporters here, I’m not sure what one is either anymore.

My feelings exactly--about Trump supporters. They've sold out conservatism for celebrity populism. When Trump nominates a liberal (can we all agree on what that is?) for the Supreme Court and dooms us to decades of 5-4 liberal decisions, I wonder if they'll give their choice a second thought.

I agree and I blame "Ted Cruz for POTUS".

Ted Cruz, the "Made in Canada/Naturalized in America and thus ineligible to be POTUS" candidate "Ted Cruz", decided to follow the obama way into the White House.

At the same time, people said and keep saying we should vote for Ted because he's the only "Conservative" in the race.

This repeated like a mantra claim has basically made his the official: Face of Conservatism.

So thanks to Ted and his ego, now

"Conservative" = "Ted Cruz"

Unfortunately,

"Ted Cruz" = Made in Canada/Naturalized in America and thus ineligible to be POTUS

Thus, the term "Conservative" now has a new meaning thanks to Ted Cruz, the young, still in his first term, Senator from Texas, though no longer Canadian, too.

He officially turned in his Canada Card to run for POTUS, but got to keep his Canadian birth certificate. Such a deal.

Persecution for the expression of opinions seems to me perfectly logical. If you have no doubt of your premises or your power, and want a certain result with all your heart, you naturally express your wishes in law, and sweep away all opposition. To allow opposition by speech seems to indicate that you think the speech impotent, as when a man says that he has squared the circle, or that you do not care wholeheartedly for the result, or that you doubt either your power or your premises.

But when men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas -- that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out.

That, at any rate, is the theory of our Constitution. It is an experiment, as all life is an experiment. Every year, if not every day, we have to wager our salvation upon some prophecy based upon imperfect knowledge. While that experiment is part of our system, I think that we should be eternally vigilant against attempts to check the expression of opinions that we loathe and believe to be fraught with death, unless they so imminently threaten immediate interference with the lawful and pressing purposes of the law that an immediate check is required to save the country.

There’s nothing to indicate that Trump would do that.

Conservative means saying what you need to during an election to appeal to ‘conservatives’ and then screw them over once you get in office.

This is a classic Bob Knight response to a stupid interview question. He hates stupid questions, but to be polite he feigns ignorance in order to move the intervew along to a more relevant question.

Communism can easily be replaced with Islamic terrorism.

To me, American exceptionalism means that we adhere to our founding principles and do not sacrifice them to go along or get along with other countries. I do believe that the U.S. is the greatest nation on earth - although we’re not perfect by a long shot. Just a lot better than all the others.

I don’t believe it has anything to do with manifest destiny and I don’t think Reagan believed that, either.

Maybe the wording, American exceptionalism, is dated and open to interpretation, but I understand what Reagan meant by it. He was extraordinarily proud of the U.S., was humbled by those who trusted him to lead us, and showed sincere reverence toward the office of the President.

I used to know what a conservative was, back in the 20th century when they still existed.

There certainly aren't many left on this site.

“There’s nothing to indicate that Trump would do that.”

You mean other than him being on record saying that his ultra leftist judge sister would be a great SCOTUS Justice?
